THE LATE REV. W. HILL, MELBOURNE.
"We have been favoured with the following extract from a letter written by a near relation of the late Rev, William Hill, Melbourne, to a resident of Tuapeka, dated 16th May last: — " The Rev. Mr. Hill was appointed chaplain to the Pentridge prison : on Thursday last he had entered into the prison of a villainous demon to pray for him and with him ; unfortunately, the Turnkey locked the door of the eell — a scufflle was heard by one of the sentries, who went and found the door locked — he with the assistance of one of the guards forced in the door, the prisoner endeavouring to keep it" closed with great strength, his arm crossing the opening they had made — ' he had murdered Mr. Hill who was lying on his right side, bleeding — his head frightfully beaten in at the back. The murderer standing over him with an iron bar he had wrenched from his bed. In the death of Mr. Hill these colonies have lost a truly good man. I have never known or met a character in every way so infinitely blessed with abilities to teach the truths and comforts of holy feelings ; blessed with talents — a bright intellect himself. His comfortable happy home is now & blank for his five orphans. His wife died last Christmas. The murderer was a prisoner for life for a previous murder, and it ia supposed, committed the fearful deed get put out of misery quickly.
