J. L. Gillies, M.P.C., deposed— Knew run No. 137. Knew of no more likely *and that would sell than that proposed to be made a Hundred. Considered that the G-overntnent should lay off a township at the Beaumont Eerry.
J. T. Thomson, Chief Surveyor. — About one-third of the proposed Hundred might be termed agricultural land. Thought that if gold were found on private property, it would be worked with as much benefit to the •ountry as on public property. Thought
the whole of the land would be sold within three years. He also thought that if the whole of the Tuapeka Common' were declared into a Hundred nearly the whole of it would be purchased in three years, as the leasing system tended to curtail settlement, from the cost and annoyance attendant on it.
John Maclean deposed that he was pastoral tenant of run No. 137. It was very hilly — only flat country was either side of the road, say 200 acres, and at the Beaumont 200 acres more. He did not consider there was any other agricultural country in the proposed Hundred. He knew of no parties desirous of settling on the land. Was of opinion that not moi*e than 200 or 300 acres would bo sold in three years. In the event of proposed Hundred being declared, the western portion of the run would be useless to him.
