Mr. HAY moved, " That an address be
to His Honour the Superintendent, requesting that he will be pleased to cause a sum of £3,000 to be placed on the Estimates, for the purpose of constructing a direct line of road, with a '■bridge across the Pomahaka River, from -Waipahi to Leathern Gorge, on the Switzers road via Tapanui." He pointed lout the many advantages, not only to the -district, but also to the province, with regard to the revenue, which would accrue opening up the Tapanui district by tineans of a road, which he had no hesitation could be made for the sum he asked .for. Mr. REID was afraid, although Tapanui was a very important district, that the Government could not agree to so large a grant of money. It was, however, their intention to have a report from a surveyor as to the best line of road
-to the district.
Captait M'KfiNZIE pointed out that ■the inhabitants of the district had a right to expect that some money would be expended in giving them a road, and thought that the Government ought to have given the matter their consideration. The present track was a very rough one, but the proposed road was along the bank .-of the river, And across the river over a over a large plain, and shortened a distance of 15 miles by five miles. The motion was negatived.
