The G-old-Mines of Xota Scotia. The official returns for the year ending 30th September 1868, have just been published by the Mines Department of Nova Scotia, from which we gather the following statistics respecting the gold yield in Nova Scotia : — Average daily number of miners employed, 7855 ; crushing mills in operation, 80th September, 37 ; quartz crushed, 31,016 tons, being an increase over previous year of 8-l<3 tons ; average per ton (of 2008 lb.), 14 dwt. 8 gr. : maximum per ton, 2-A oz. 6 "dwt. 16 gr. ; gold from alluvial, 59 oz. 15 dwt. 12 gr. ; total gold yield, 22,2770z. 7 dwt. — being an increase frorii last year of 5305 oz. 19 dwt. 9 gr. average per man, at $18.5-1 per oz. §52467. Since the gold-mines first opened, the Nova Scotia G-overmnent has netted at least £100,000 in royalty and rents. A Lieutenant in the ofch Dragoon G-uards was before the London Bankruptcy Court lately, with debts amounting to £7607, while his assets only represented £54. In seeking to accounc for some of the expenditure, the bankrupt had put down a considerable fiun as spent -in " hunting the Fenians in Ireland. A Eathek Hanging his Son.— Richard Cooper, nn engraver, living in Spencer-street, Birmingham, was arrested for attempting to hang his son, six years old. Cooper, who has been accustomed to get drunk, hung the lad, but had not the heart to carry oufc hia intention.
