ESCAPE OF A WOLF FROM A MENAGERIE.

A menagerie, which is, now on exhibition in Liverpool, was the scene of a singular occurrence a short time ago. The night watchman belonging to the establishment was suddenly disturbed by a great uproar amongst the monkeys, a large number of which were located in sundry cages round a coke fire in the centre of the enclosure of the menagerie. On proceeding to the spot, the watchman discovered that a large Siberian wolf had marie its escape from its den, and was busily engaged worrying some of the monkeys. He seized the first weapon available, and commenced td soundly belabour the wolf, which quickly turned upon its assaila.pt. Tlie savage brute turned upon the watchman, making its fangs meet in his right thigh. The man roared for."assistance, and. Mr. Whittingion was socn to- the rescue, but he could not make the wolf lose its grip until he had made, a vigorous onslaught upon it with a twopronged stable fork. Several of the Liverpool borough police who were on duty in the vicinity, attracted by the uproar and shouts for assistance, appeared on the scene, but they evidently did not consider it a portion of their " duty " to place an enraged escaped wolf in durance vile again ; while, on, the other hand, the animal did not appear to be the least disconcerted by the formidable appearance of the guardians of the peace, but boldly confronted the whole posse. After several futile attempts, Mr. Whittin<rton succeeded in throwing a rope with a slip-noose over the head of the wolf, and thus lassoed the brute, which was then taken back to its old quarters. The man is now under medical treatment, and no serious • results are anticipated. The wolf escaped throngh carelessness on the part of the keeper.
