WEDNESDAY.
The only public event 1 of this day was the Duke of Edinburgh Races, which ■took place at ' the race course, Silver Stream. Up now, the city presented much sf the activity which had characterised the preceding ' -days. The general business transacted was very limited, only a few retail dealers venturing to open their doors. Towards mid-day, preparations for visiting the race course became general; -Every species of veliicle appeared to be impressed into the service, from the well-appointed carriage «nd pair to the heavy, cumbrous goods waggon, chartered and fitted up for the 'occasion. TDb a certain extent, each of these machines represented the characteristics of their patrons, and while the one rolled along in majestic silence, the boistrons merriment which emanated from the other was no less characteristic of the event. Shortly after noon, the Duke arrived at the course, accompanied by the gentlemen of his staff. His appearance was the signal for the commencement of the day's sports, which were got' 1 through as follows : — Maiden Plate of 80 soys "Mr. W. C. Corson's Bobby, aged, 600 yards start 5 As night set in, the rain, which threatened to come on the "whole day, came down heavily, and by the time the race course visitors reached 'town they were only too glad to get under cover. A few of the more prominent illuminations were lit up ; but for that, no one could have distinguished it from an ordinary miserable evening, such as may .be met with in Dunedin five nights in the week during the winter season. H.R.H. dined at the Otago Club in the evening, but as the doings of that select body are kept a profound secret, I am unable to say how things got on with him.
