WAITAHUNA.

(From our own Correspondent.) On Friday last, a ball was given by the members of the Dancing Class to ..some of their friends. It was quite a Jsmart affair — the room tastefully decorated, and not too crowded, made every one. feel comfortable and at ease. If the invitation from the members to .their" friends was meant to display their progress in the terpsichorean art after a quarter's practice, they have cause to be proud, for to an onlooker it was difficult to tell old dancers from the new' beginners. A counter-petition to the one presented to Mr. Hughes the other day, praying for the whole of the Flat to be reserved as a goldfield, is lying at Mr. pudaille's for signature, praying that a piece of it be sold'to suit one or two individuals; and strange to say, by what inducement I do not know, some who signed the former petition have signed this one likewise. It will be a hard matter for the Government to please those who cannot . please themselves. The former petition was signed by 154 in one day, while only 13 signatures have been got for this one, after lying for a week. The Waitahuna . Heights were covered with snow last Friday morning, and presented quite a wintery aspect. A meeting was held at Coghill's Assembly Boom, on Monday evening, to enable those desirous of becoming Foresters to enter their names, arid learn the benefits and advantages of same from a former member of the Order. The readings on Monday last were very . poorly attended, showing that even Waitahunaites can have too much of a good thing.
