TAPANUI SCHOOL.

(From "a Correspondent). This school has been established about nine months, and has increased in pupils from nine to thirty-four during that period. The usual examination took place on the 7th instant, when there was a good attendance of the parents, the members of the school committee, and a few gentlemen from the neighbouring stations. The Education Board granted a small sum for the purchase of prizes, which was handsomely supplemented, by the Rev. Mr. Uric, Messrs. M'Kellar, Patterson, and Neish (the teacher). The examination was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Uric, Mr. White of the school committee, and the teacher. Mr. Hislop had promised to call during his tour of inspection of this portion- of the Province, but he intimated to the committee that, owing to a pressure. of. business, he was unable .to do so for some time — which is very much to be regretted, as. the Committee intended laying before him personally the claims of tho district to have a schoolhouse and" teacher's residence erected on the section reserved for that purpose. However, a memorial to the Education Board on tho matter is now in course of signature. Before giving you a list of the successful competitors for prizes, I may mention that the greater number of them never attended" any school prior to the opening of the present one; consequently the greater merit is due to their inlßfatigablo teacher, Mr. Neish, for the rapid progress • made, which is .alike satisfactory to- parent and teacher.
