"WETHERSTONES DEEP SHAFT.

(To tlie Editor of the Tnapd;a Times.)

Sir, — About five or six weeks ago, one of our representatives iv the Provincial Council, Mr. J. C. Brown, informed the Wetherstones Deep Shaft Committee that the sum of £100 was lying at Lawrence for their use, to enable them to prove the value of the bed rock, the grant having been made with the provision that the Committee should get £20 additional subscribed by the public. Now, Mr. Editor, this amount was raised in a few hours, not by the Committee, but by Mr. Brown. Some of the Committee awoke from their long slumber, and one of their body came round and collected the new subscription, and since then 1 have seen no further sign of their existence. If they are asleep I hope you will wake them up, and let them know that, as public men, it is time they were stirring, and looking after the trust the public have placed in their hands. I should not be surprised when the rope (lately new) on the whim at the present time is handed over to any industrious or persevering men they will pronounce it unsafe for any one of them to work under, as it ha 3 been exposed to the inclemency of the weather for some considerable time. I think the public have a right to know these things in order that they may not be constantly putting their hands in their pockets to provide for expenses caused by the neglect or mismanagement of public men. — I am, &c,

A SIJBSCIttBEB TO THE DEEP Shaft Fuxd.-
