THE BREAD QUESTION.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.)

Sib, — As there appears to bea great deal said about the price of bread lately, I think it is not out of place to give a few remarks now. I have heard that Mr. Harrs's tender for supplying the hospital with bread i 3 B£d per loaf of best quality and full weight, and at the same time he has tbe conscience to charge his usual customers Is. Surely the public are not so bliud as to allow such an exorbitant amount to be charged them without noticing it. As this matter has been before the public so much, I feel it a duty to explain it as fully as possible, and quite agree with " Housewife's" opinion of last week.

Now, Sir, just imagine a tradesman charging the exorbitant price of 3id per loaf over a fair price. In Dunedin the price is 5d and 6d, in Tokomairiro it is Bd, and surely our bakers ought to be very well satisfied with 9d, as cartage from Tokomairiro is only about 35s per ton, which will make only about one halfpenny per loaf difference. The only plan the public ought to adopt is to bake their own bread, and then they would soon bring the bakers that carry on this monopoly to their teases. The only excuse they have is that carrying it out makes the great difference of 30 per cent. I must not trouble your valuable space, but will conclude [by saying I shall bake my own bread and hope everybody will follow my example. , I am, &c. Economist. Blue Spur, April 2, 1869.
