TOWN COUNCIL.
A meeting of Town Council was held on Wednesday evening, attended by Crs. Henderson, Hay, Meyer, Keen, Walker, and Mears (in tho chair). The minutes of last meeting having been r©ad and approved, the Clerk read a letter from the Government in reference to the completing of Robb Place, itating that instructions had been given tome time ago to advertise for tenderi, and therefore it wag to be supposed that the work would shortly be proceeded with. Considerable indignation was expressed at this shuffling communication ; but finally the letter was received. Several accounts were then referred to the finance committee; and the Clerk submitted the financial statement, which otir readers will find in our advertising columns. Public works committee report No. 10, recommending that fresh tenders should be called for constructing the new reservoir if D. Whittet could not find a bondsman; that the piping should be removed from Colonsaystreet, and the stand-pipe ia Ross Place examined; was received and adopted. Or. Mears moved, " That it is advisable to raise a Volunteer Fire Brigade," and in a few pithy sentences showed the advantages to be derived from such a course. Cr. Hay seconded, and the motion was carried. Cr. Meyer, moved, " That five street lamps be erected, and that the carrying out of the matter be referred to the public works committee. Cr. Hay seconded. On a division, the numbers were — For the motion, 2 : Crs. Meyer and Hay. Against, 3 : Crs. Henderson, Keen, and "Walker. The motion was accordingly lost. Cr. Keen then, in accordance with the notice given at last meeting, moved, " That a stockyard be erected for the impounding of cattle straying within the municipality, and for a market yard, and other public purposes." Cr. Meyer seconded, and complained of cattle prowling about his place at night and doing damage. Cr. Henderson said cattle had actually come to his bedroom door lately. Cr. Walker thought the- proposed site over the ere 3k unsuitable. Cr. Mears said that was a question for the public works committee to deal with. The resolution was then put and carried. Cr. Mears called the attention of the Council to the further bridge over the creek on the Gabriels Road, which was inconvenient and dangerous, especially for children. t Cr. Henderson said the rise of the creek was caused by the accumulation of tailings from the Spur. Cr. Hay- moved, " That the Clerk be instructed to write a iharp letter to t^e Government, calling their attention to the state of the bridges." ICr. Meyer seconded ; arid after some conversation the motion was -carried. jOr. Hay moved, "That immediate effect be given to the resolution of the Council relating to calling tenders for the improvement of Lancaster-street," which he described as being a perfect diigrace to the town. ur. Keen seconded. dr. Mears thought £20 to £25 ought to do all the work required ; as it was, it •vrai impossible for' the Inspector to summon people for nuisances as long as the municipality continued one of the chief offenders. Tlie motion was then agreed to. Cr\ Walker gave notice that he wouU move at next meeting, '/That tenders for erecting a weigh-bridg© be called/for."' . - After some discussion, from which it appeared that the Council had already passed resolutions for improvements 'sufficient to engage all their revenue, for one year at any rate, the Counci adjourned for a, fortnight.
