Destructive fires occurred at Whanganui, and Maketu, North Island, on Christmas day. Tararoa, a Maori chief, fell into a boiling spring at Ohenemutu lately, and was boiled to death. Mr. Driver is opposed in his candidature for the Koslyn district, by Mr. Colin Allan. Sunday desecration is the current topic in Dunedin, and the "Times" has, during the last week, contained many instances of narrowmindedness and bigotry. Dr., Carf the mesmerist, was sued in Hokitika for £30, due as wages to a man who appeared as "his subject." Something like the " awful example " of teetotal lecturers this. The township of Gladstone, Gipp'g Land, has been destroyed by a bush fire. A nugget weighing, according to the '♦Australasian," thirteen and a half pounds, has. been found at the Berlin rush. .Sir James Ferguson will not arrive in Queensland till February, I?he Union Club, Melbourne, has collapsed. Margaret Gibbins. ' The men of the Wanganui Cavalry object strongly to the raising of a Native Mounted Contingent. At Carisbrook and Maryborough there is a great demand for farm labourers. Professor Halford has discovered that tha injection of ammonia into the blood cures snake bites. A kind of weekly religious revival is taking place at Carterton, Wellington. - The remains of the late Major Von Tempsky have been recovered, the pah of Ngutu-o-te-Manu having been evacuated by the rebels. ■ Great dissatisfaction is felt in Auckland at the escape of Te Kooti. The Siam, for London, took away 23,011 ounces of gold, the result of two months' digging at the Thames.
