MEETING OF TOWN COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Town Council was held on Wednesday evening. The Mayor being absent, Cr.-Mears was elected Chairman. Crs. Walker, Henderson, Keen, Hay, and Meyer were present. The Clerk read a report from the Public Works Committee, recommending .that the offer of a fire-engine from Messrs. R. B. Martid and Co.^ Dunedin, should not he at present accepted, ■and calling the attention of the Council to the dangerous state of Lancas-ter-street. The report was received and adopted. A letter from Mr. Henry, in reference to the verandah of the Camp Hotel, requesting that the indulgence accordedtotheformerproprietor should be given, was referred to the Public Works Committee. .. The following tenders for the construction of the new reservoir were then opened:— W. Tolcher, £204 75. 6cL; D. Whittet, £150 10s.; Thomas Kelly, £140. Kelly's, being lowest, was accepted. , Cr. Keen moved, "That the Clerk be instructed to write to Government, enquiring when the Cemetery is to be handed over to the municipality;" the motion further stated that Government had made a promise to this effect, and urged its immediate performance. He said .there was little doubt every person would be glad to see the Town Council entrusted with the management of the Cemetery, as the trustees had signally failed to make it anything more than a lasting, and absolute disgrace to the place. No one, he alleged, if there existed any other legal place of burial, would enter even a. dog in it. This might not be entirely the fault of the trustees : he did not blame them ; and it was presumable that a body of Government nominees did not possess public confidence. The Town Council, on the otherjband, from its popular constitution,* did presumably possess public confidence ; and from its frequent meeting, was far more likely to manage affairs in an effective manner than the trustees could be expected to do. He desired the Town Clerk should write a respectful but definite letter, reminding Government of their former promises in this matter, and expressing a hope that an end would be put to the present disgraceful state of things. In other places the cemetery was generally a favourite place of; resort, the pride of the place ; but nere it was the shame.
