MINING-INTELIIGENCE.
The following is from a recent Hum)er of the "Southland News" :^Mr. J^H Lothian, one of the party of miners jjj^^fl irho have been for some time project- ~^^^H n& on &tew?trt-'s Island. (Kuggedj Kay), returned yesterday. He reports . it moderate degree of success, and states that the quart* reefs show unmistakeable indications of sold, but Efoat to test them thoroughfy would require more capital, than the party lias at comn&and. n ,_ qOLDFOXPSOfIRCTOEIA.. The gpjdfields of Victoria now exbend westward from Stawell to the River Bendoc, 69 the eastern confines of the colony, a distance of 350 miles, and from north to south nearly 18Q miles. Number of miners employed in 1866, 73,577; in 1867, 65,857; showing a decrease of 7,720. On 31st December, 1867, there were 15,629 Chinese engaged in alluvial, and 47 in quartz nfpivmg — being a decrease of 4,458 on former year's returns. In 1867, 2,381 auriferous quartz reefs hadbeen opened, and 868| square. miles of auriferous - ground worked more «r less.|. * •*- . AUCKLAND. * The long-coveted auriferous grounds; of the Upper Thame are y expected, with some certainty, to be opened within a month at the outside. A littie alluvial gold has been found in the Ohinemuri, and also Borne reefs, but nothing as yet to boast . of. Most of the natives are very much pleased at the successful termination of Mr. Mackay 'a mission. The warm weather J^M is felt very much after the late, cold '^H winds.
