MEETING OF CATTLE OWNERS AT WAIPORI.
A Meeting of cattle owners, called by notice, was held at Mr. T. Q-ormley'B G-olden Age Hotel, on Friday 27th ult. at 7 o'clock P.M. At the spcified time there was a considerable number present. Mr. Ritchie was 'called upon to occupy the chair >v and in opening the meeting stated the object * t ior which it had been called. Owing to an observation of his Honour the Superintendent, on his visit to Waipori, that there was at present a small sum of money lying in the Treasury, which might be made availablefor tho purchase of a Common; he advised the inhabitants to take tho initial steps to obtain ifc, by negotiating with some run-holder, to purchase part of his run for a common, and he would do his best to obtain the money for the district. Messrs. Cable and Drummond, owners of run 51 had mado a very-fair offer, to give part of their run for the purpose, but Mr. Bu-
chanan would explain the offer further. Mr. Buchanan then came forward, and explained to the meeting, that Messrs. Cable and Drummond were willing to relinquish the portions of their run, extending from S. W. boundary of present common, to junction of Waipori river, to extend the common, provided they received the sum of £250 as compensation. It was then proposed by Mr. Shacldeton, seconded by Mr. Wright, "Thatthe offer of Messrs. Cable and Drummond be recommended to the Government; that a deputation, consisting of Messrs. Ritchie, I Pilling, and M'Ledowney, be appointed to wait upon the Progress Com- j i mittee, and request them to forward the resolutions to the proper quarter, and take the necessary steps to obtain the desired object." The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the chair. An extraordinary meeting of Progress Committee was at once called, present; Mr. Cable, chairman; Mr. M'Cay, secretary; Mr. Cairns, treasurer; Messrs. Buchanan, Lewis, Fox, Drummond and Farrant. Mr. Pilling on behalf of the deputtation presented the resolutions passed at the meeting of Cattle Owners and explained the reason why the Committee were requested to act for them. Proposed by Mr. Farrant, seconded Mr. Lewis, that the request of deputaion be complied with.
