STRANGE MURDER IN FRANCE.

A curious murder case has just been tried in Paris. The victim was a lady who had lived with a M. Forrest at a country-house in the environs. Shortly before her death she took into her service a cook named Marie Eleveat, who previously appeared to havo led a career equally chequered and immoral. It was proved in evidence that, with the assistance of her mother, she entered her mistress's bath-room whilst in a bath, and murdered her by the simple process of forcing her head under the water, and keeping it there until life was extinct. The deceased lady was carried to her room, and laid on tlie bed, and the two assassins having poured a quantity of oil on the floor of the room, set it on fire. Tho conflagration was very fierce, whilst it lasted, but tho flames did not touch the bed, or the inanimate body upon it. A post mortem examination showed that the deceased had died of asphyxia., and that the fire could not have caused it. The motive of the crime was theft, and it was clearly traced to the prisoners, who were sentenced to hard labour for life.
