QUEENSTOWN.
(From *w own Correspondent). Queeustown, August 18. A special meeting of tho Council was held last Tuesday, for tho purpose of appointing a Town Clem for the present municipal year. Present:— John Robertson, Esq., Mayor, Cra. Hallenstein, Burn, Malaghau, Powell, •nd Fratr. Tue only application was from th* -late Town Clerk, Mr. il. Manderi. A good deal of discussion took place oa the subject, Crs. Hallenstein and Fraer condemning the manner in which Mr. Manders had done his duty, tho books had been kept in a Tory careless way, and it w»s only by their constant talking to him, he was so far forward with the books. It was decided to giro th Town Clerk till to-day to finish posting up the books. Cr. Powell proposed, " That Mr. Mander's application be received, and that h« be engaged as Town Clerk." After some discussion Cr. Powell at the suggestion of Cr. Fraer, amended his proposition as follows :—": — " That the application of Mr. Maudera be accepted subject to summitry dismissal ou motion by majority of Council, such services to commence from 18th of August, 1868." Seconded bj Cr. Burn, and carried. After some other business, a vot* of thanks to the chair concluded the proceedings. The salary of Town Clerk is fixed at L4O per year, and ten per c#nt. for collating rates. Mr. Millett, the assistant mining surveyor, having received instructions to proceed to Dunedin, as the Government were making retrenchment in the survey staff in this district, it was determined by a number of the inhabitants to present him on his leaving with a testimonial, as a mark of their esteem, for which purpose they assembled at the town hall on Friday evening, the Mayor in the chair, who »poke as follows : — Gentlemen, we have met on this evening for the purpose of j presenting to Mr. Millett a Bmall testimonial of our respect and esteem, and I am sure you will all join with me in wishing him prosperity wherever he may be. I shall now call upon Cr. Hallenstein to read the testimonial. Cr. Hallenstein then came forward, and read tho following, which was received with great approbation : — To Richabd MiMiBTT, Esq., CE* Assistant Mining Surveyor. Dear Sir,— We, the undersigned members of the Corporation, of the town of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, Otago, desire to take this opportunity of expressing our regret at your departure, from this district, in which from the kindness and attention you have always displayed in your duties as Government surveyor, aa also the willingness yon have at all times evinced in rende.-ing professional assistance in promoting the welfare of out public and charitable institutions, you havo won the respect and esteem of the entire population. We can only add, that wherever you may be located, you will bear with your the best wishes not only of this body, but of the inhabitants generality, by whom we have been requested to present you with this purse of sovereigns, with which they trust you will be enabled to purchase some small memento that will ever remind you, when removed from this neighborhood that you have left behind you so many friends. That 1 regret to leave this portion of the Province where I have been so long located Z need not tell you, as within its boundary tho wealth to ,be developed is, as regards its mineral aud agricultural resources, such sa will entitle it to rank first in the Frorinco. I regret to leave the Wakatip for another reason ; I had hoped to hare made it my home ; of 6uch wish many of you aro no doubt aware, and I was induced to think of doing so, knowing that I had made some friend* whilst among you. Gentlemen, I hare to beg that yon will excuse my brief reply, but as I dare §ay, some of you know, I am a man of action more than of words, and it is with deep feelings of re* gret that I wish you all farewell. A meeting of subscribers to the Athemeum was hold in tho town hall on Friday last to take into consideration the desirability of opening the reading room on Sunday, B. H. Hallenstein, Esq., vice-Preaident iv the chair. A' vast amount of discussion took place, when it was eventually decided by about two-third* of the members "That the reading room be open on Sundays from two to six o'clock, and from eight to ten o'clock." This institution is progressing favorably, the books ordered from, Mr. Fraer having arrived. The library consists of over two hundred volumes, the sum of Ll3 12s. 6d. balance of monej from the local committee of tho exhibition, by permission of Governinont, was handed over by the hon. treasurer, Mr. Wright, to the Athenwum Committee, and they have decided to order books to that amount from Mr. Fraer, so that when they arrive, and tho books due aa subsidy aro sent by Government, the library wilL ! uumber over 500 voluinoa. The Phoenix (late Scaudiuavian Quartz Company, Skippers) have struck another reef, which I believe promises extreme! v well, so there is every prospeot of tilings looking better iv that district next summer.
