TUAPEKA MOUTH: :
(From a (&rre»pondent.)
On the evening of Saturday- the Ist instant ttimrader of individuals assembled at a store in the* vic&uijs'of the Mouth to cast lots for,a, celebra£ed/4 u adruped and some jeWeiryVtHe pfop^rty* of Mr Toorbad. About an hour aftejNne above property had been disposed of .jlo'thosewho stood highest .on the roll, ..and their former owner had ; received his money, the company were amusing' themselves, some in one way and some in another ; Mr Too-bad started up and exclaimed "I've lost my too- ■ ney." He was conducted to another spar* ment, < and after overhauling his pockets, pocketboo*, &c., found that he was minus two thirds of the money. The proprietor became excited that such a thing should happen in his house informed the company of the loss, and said every man must be searched. Accordingly a searcher was appointed, when he and the looser of the money repaired to a private room where the different individuals were ■tripped one by one in their presence; when it came to your humble servant's turn I demurred against taking off my clothes. -The -answer I received from the newly eppointed detective wm" all the others have done ir, yon can do m you please." I immediately saw that to refuse was to be suspected, so off went boots, breeks, 4c. One or two more were search'jd' after me, still no money was found. tMibok tl(e searcher aside, and asked if Mr. T. had beer stripped. .He suid^" No." ■" Well, call him and-. strip him,", In he. comes, off' gqes^ hi habi.lementsi but nothing! camel to Sriew. I said " Searcher, you did not exam ins ''m^'cravat.'L.Xunnvdiately- throw -it off, T. - f did the some, and down fefl >oft the floor thd missing money. What the readers of this would have done on such an occasion I do not know, but I can eanlj^guess had such a 'pieon of poltroonery been enacted in Yankee- j land, what would 'have taken pfaee. There j would have been fowls for dinner next day, and the poof innocent chuckics wouM he ye been stripped to the skin ; also not in expectation of the money, but that their ornamental, clothing should adorn (he body of Mr. Toobad after it hud been carefully besmeared with Stockholm tar or nm «ther adhesive infrttimt.
