,OLD PETER PIPBR TO THE MAYOR i\ AND COUNCILLORS OR LAW--RENCE.
Honored Sim,-^llow me moit cordially congratulate you upon the manngpi~irhich you have " put on " theodornmentk of office, and the .form -and, symmetry of your actions, which I am glad to perceive by a report in last Saturday's " Times." Although an outsider, permit mo to say I feet very riiuch interested in your deliberations ; and as you have nowgot some new blood, and that not inferior to any in the good city of Lawrence, I shall watch with much interest evejry move, having for its object the prosperity and the beautifying of our' incorporated borough: The inhabitants have very wisely given an. extention of time to pur respected Mayor. You have entered upon another year of office, having peaceful paths tinder your feet, and I have" no doubt but that your first concern will be to make your ways pleasant. I ' can krdly understand, however, what, you no going to do with Boss Place, or whether your engineer intends it for a canal or a highway.- I observe^ by; the elevated footpath and the low level of4he road that it is more like the former than the latter. I trust that, if its present condition is maintained,' you will provide life buoys at the crossings, in cue of accidents, as I hear that one of our newly-fledged Councillors!; fell' over-.' board the other day, and was nearly lost. I hope the .Council jrill now be-ieen-ly-dive to the necessity of doing something to prevent a repetition of such a casualty;that, however desirable sometimes it is, for men to "stand in the 'gap',"'they*-afre^ not the material, although men of metal, to fill up holes in the street with. The, influence of such a distinguished body as you are oughtia Jiave sufficient weight with the Government so ,as to get this, wain highway put in good condition. I think, too, that, •as a corporation, and conservators of . the public weal, you" should have an eye to. all the road* leading from the outlying districts: Yon are deeply interested in the ease and safety with which every person, whether on lone or foot, may visit your town. Generally speaking, every person who visits Lawrence adds-to its wealth- and mportance, and therefore it concerns you to know that no accidents happen within your ken or your capacity to grapple with hindrances to travel to town. lam sure you would not like to hear of drays upset, men's legs broken, or the children going to school washed down the storm channel ; yet the latter danger stares me in the face every time I visit your fair city. But I suppose nothing will be done --no, not even .a handrail put upon that ricketty sham called a bridge, until such a calamity occurs.- J>o, gentlemen, Jook into this matter ; and when" you are reiewing this one — which I presume is on i-the corporation. estate^ just , go a littite farther up Gabriels road, and see if anytfting can be done with other two,. Don't say you liave nothing to do with" them. YoWhave all *o do with them ; the different Jughways are ygnomaim Hittpfee, through which flow your vitality g^|jN)ur wealth, arid it is your interest 1 , tb see^that the approaches to your city are Ltafe in all weather ; and moreover, travelllers should^be impressed with the- fact': |ft*f theyv«JßJpproacbing a city whose , IRhabitantsl^Snterprising, and enjoying , I^l high degree of civilisation. 1 1 I hare the honnr to be, II ' < Gentlemen, 111 1 Tour obedient servant, 1 1 _ Old Psm'Pim. 1 1 Wethtstonas Bra—, ■I 1 *****
