A Special meeting, of the Tuapeka Hospital Committee was held in the Commercial Hotel on Thursday evening, for the purpose of opening the applications .for the situation of gardner. Mr. Bastings (President) ' occupied the chair. The following members of Committee were present : Messrs. Russell, Hay, Potts, Brown, Meyer, Henderson, Smith, M'Cliißky, ! M'Swiney, Farrar, Hayes, Lyng, Drs. Stewart i and Hally, and the Secretary. There were ! eighteen applications for the situation, all of which were read, as- 'also the numerous testiimoniajs accompanying the most of them, from which it appeared that they were all equally qualified as pracdcalgardeners. After" a conversation as to the -relative merits of two or three of the candidates, Mr. Arthur Henderson drew the attention of the Committee to the application of Thomas Peters, who had been working in the garden for the last month, to the entire satisfaction' of Dr. Stewart and the Visiting Committee.,., Peters, in.. his application, stated 1 that l?.e had not any* testimonials in his possession, but h& could easily procure them if allowed time ; he was quite willing to continue at the work-for a month or six weeks on trial if -the, Committee wished him. Mr. Smith, Mr. .Henderson* and Mr. Hay bore testimony to his work during the month he had been working in' the Hospital garden. Mr. Henderson then moved, and Mr, Smith seconded, the following resolution, "That Mr. Thomas, Peters be appointed to fill the situation of gardner for the Tuapeka Hospital." There being no other proposal or amendment, the resolution was put to the meeting, anff carried unanimously. • The wearing, then .cloiftd, . t , . , „,.-,

We have the pleasure!, to inform' our-Waipon readers that we have heard' on very good j&thority it ia the intention ok the ' Government very sfifoortly ij^ppoigjTa resident clerk and-.Gold KeVejiver #Sr their district ; such an appointment ■"will supply a -want which Tfe have dp. many occasionsjjjointetl out to the Government. ,* AVhile ,owe rejoice' that Waigori is to receive part of Jihat a^htiop wh^ichi&ir.doe to it, we at the same time regret that our respected "Warden' Major Croker, is to be superseded. Had the General Government, instead of serving the Major, who has been one of their staunch supPQrtert, an' .ihe^maimer jtliey have done, -ap": pointed 'binr*- Resident Magistrate and Gold' Receiver at "VVaipori, with a salary somewhat -jeduced^.fchek action-.,would -have . been much more graceful, and the saving effected to them would have been quite as much as by the arTangementthey propose. So long as Waipori has not a resident Warden, the necessity for the Tuapeka Warden's visit will exist, and we %re certain that the drfties both of Tuapeka and Waipori would be far more efficiently performed if the offices of Warden and Gold Receiver fof "Waipori were combined, and in- the event of its being possible that such an arrangement might yet being carried out, we cannot fancy any gentleman who would suit the requirements of the Waipori district so well as Major Croker. We hear it is in contemplation by .some of our licensed victuallers and others^ to establish .in this district a joint stock Brewery Company, under the limited Liability Act. It is high tiiae the, large amount of money, remitted to the home country for inalf liquors should be , circulated.in the country in which the liquors , are consumed. _. As regards our o-wn district" r we ' have every facility for the growth of barley, the soil, and climate being . in every respect suitable for that cereal, and as regards water we have now, or will have in a very short time an abundant supply. We believe a company such, as is contemplated, worked under efficieut management, ■ .would ibe a remunerative speculation, and on that ground we wish iti promoters every success. • The nomination for Councillors takes place on Monday next. Crs. Robertson and Jeffery retire by rotation, and Cr. Aimers has resigned, there are therefore five Councillors to be elected :— namely j East Ward, two; Middle or New Ward, two ;' West Ward, one. Several requisitions have been presented, and two or three candidates are in the field. Mr. Walsh has received a requisition, numerously signed, to stand for Middle Ward, but he has not yet publicly stated his intention to comply with the wish of the requisitionists. Mr. 'Mears, in reply to a requisition, is in the field, for East ward, Mr. Matthew Hay and Mr. J. L. S. Keen- for Middle* ward, and Mr. Meyers for A Meeting of cattle owners was held in Potts' Viotoria Hotel, on the evening of Monday, the 20th instant, to make arrangements for calling a public meeting for the election- of wardens in accordance with the Provincial " Government Gazette " of June 24th, for the Depasturing district of Tuapeka. There were present :•- Messrs. Brown (in chair) Lancaster, Docherty, Vause, Robertson, and others. In a conversation which took place, it was considered that from the fact of the power" to elect a chairman being left in the hands of the Superintendent, the effective p6wer of the wardens would to a great extent be destroyed. The meeting finally agreed to call a meeting for last evening, which was held in the Victoria Hotel, Mr., Vause in the chair. The fpllowing were nominated as v wardens for the Tuapeka district : -Messrs. Robertson, Mcc, Evans, Gascoigne, Lees, Curreigh, Livingstone, Hunter, Michael, Dartonf Cameron. The election willtake place on Saturday, the Ist of August ; and we shall give a report of the meeting held last evening, in our issilo of Saturday next. In carrying out a resolutidn passed by the Provincial Council in May last, having for its object the entire re-organisation of the Government staff, and dispensing with every unnecessary officer, the Government are sending round notices of dismissal to all their 'servants, fromthe 30th of April, 1869, at the same time coininunicating with those 'officers whose services they wish to retain. Mr v J. M. Nicolson, draughtsman, Lawrence, has received intimation that he is one of the officers with, whose services the Government do not desire to dispense. In this decision we feel satisfied the Government have adopted v » wise step. MrNicolson is an old and well tried servant, and any gentleman who has dealings with his de partmenfc is aware of ( the care exactitude with which his department is conducted. Mr. Nicolson is ToioWirf or his kind and obliging, disposition, and we are certain that the renewal of his appointment will meet -with the eritire.ap? proval of the residents in the Tuapefca district. We are pleased to sea the great improvements made in the surroundings of, and approaches to our Court-house, especially as these improvements Jiave been effected by the employment of prison labor, Ii the jail were under Municipal control there «,rejpnany : worki , of great value to the corporation winch-might be carried out successfully by prison labor, but v besides deriving beneficial result^jaf^variout kin Is, we believe that results of a^iKfferent nature, although of an equally beneficial description, would flow from the employment ofc, prisoners -on public works.
