ELECTION OF MAYOR.
1 ' On Tuesday, the election for Mayor passed off much quieter than was generally expected. ~ There was no sign of -excitement until within half an hour of four o'clock. A few minutes after that hour, the duties of scrutineers being finished, Mr. Jeffery, the Heturing Officer for .the occasion, came to the window of the Council Chambers, and declared the !" slate of" the poll to be as follows :—: — U 'i' or ' * ■ ' r ' ; Bastings .'t. "..'. ... 559 -.;Hay. . .---9 * "Donovan" '.V. " ..." ... 1 - The result was hailed with loud cheering." % ' Mr. Bastings then, as 'the successful candidate, 'came forward first and adWesaedthe electors. He said he was not lit'all disappointed at the result. He was cdrtain^wheh-he- -received .such a numerously signed requisition^ that he would receive the support cf the ratepayers. He could only-return them his sincere thanks.
