QUEENSTOWN.
(From our Own Correspondent). In my last" letter I had to complain of the very rough weather we were then suffering from ; since that time, we have had nice sunny day 8, with sharp mornings and evenings, till Tuesday night, when a very heavy fall of snow took place, and .on Wednesday morning it lay about four inches tnick in the town. , Business was entirely suspended, and snow-balling was the order of the day. Our mails have been very irregular, owing j to the bad roads between this place and Dun- i edin. We do not receive our Wednesday's mail till Friday, and we have had no waggons from town for over a month. Fortunately, ! the Invercargili road has been open,' and all our supplies are coming that way. Owing to waggons, not- reaching Clyde from Dunedin, the storekeepers of that place have had to get their supplies of flour from Messrs. | Robertson and Hallenstein's mill, thus bring1 ing the Wakatip produce into consumption. A meeting was held at the Arrow last week j to take into consideration the desirability of i establishing another flour mill in the district} ! when it was decided to erect one byja jointstock company — two hundred sb.ares*~at £10 each ; so~ that next year'the crops are likely to double tais year'ssyield. Southberg and Co. brought down a cake of gold weighing one hundred and twenty-two ; ouncesj the result of eight weeks' crushing. The ground ,8* the Big Beach, Shotover, which' has .been laying idle this last eighteen months, .is again, to be worked— Mr. Malnghnn, the holder of the leose, having sold it to. a number of Chinamen, and they are now setting in to work, their pumber is about thirty, which greatly adds~lo~bur population. Several Chinamen Ure Tiding very well at the Five Mile Lake. A very able lecture was delivered on the 30th ult., in the Town Hall, by the Rev. Mr. Martin, Presbyterian 1 Minister. The subject was — " What constitutes a hero ? " The attendance was very good, and. the lecturer was listened to with great attention. At the close, a hearty vote of thanks' was accorded to him for his kindness in entertaining the inhabitants. The funds were in aid of the public library... , *■ The Athenaeum was opened on the Ist inst., and is likely to become a first-class institution, the Committee using* every endeavor to make it popular, a Debating Society is about to be formed in connection with this institution. His Worship the /Mayor, J. W. Robertsdnt Esq., has received a very flattering requisition, signed by nearly all the ratepayers, expressing ;fchen\' confidence jn, his past tio|Sj,- and requesting him to again allow himself to be nominated for 1 the ' Mayoralty. • - He-has' -consented, and will be elected without opposition. This will be bis third year of office. Thel.*'elfefl(3onToff"f Coijncillors is likely to afford us some excitement, as we are to haVe an additional' r wardy:thuß making '.six council lore, instead of four. The Councillors who remain in ofllce are Messrs. Powell and Fraer. .The rfltirfog Councilors, Messrs. Hallenstein and Malaghan, are likely to be returned for their respective wards without a contest, but for the new ward, several qandyiate^ are mentioned. * '*'_;*" "" I
