THE TEVIOT MEMORIAL AND MR. WARDEN HICKSON.
We have been favored with the following copy of a letter forwarded to his Honor the Superintendent by Mr. George Mackay, of the Teviot, in reply to Mr. Warden Hickson's report, which we published in our issue of the 20fch ultimo :— " Teviot, Ist July, 1868. " To his Honor James Macandrew, Esq. « Sib, — The residents of this place who have attached, their names to the late memorial respecting the survey of this township have deemed it their imperative duty (in vindication of their moral character, so unjustifiably assailed by Mr. Warden Hickson in his report) to forward for your Honor's serious consideration the accompanying letter. " I would first direct your Honor's attention to where Mr. Hickson states that 'on measuring, he found over three chains at the nearest point from the river Clutha to the nearest street line.' I must remark that no practical person would ever think of measuring from the water edge of precipitous banks ; and even then there are not three chains. It states in the memorial that the distance from the river bank to the street line is one and a quarter chain. The actual distance is one chain and four feet. "Mr. Warden Hickson next states that he does not consider the ground along the bank and beach of West Roxburghpayable. The only reason he adduces for that assertion is, that he has had no application for any of the ground since he has been in the district— now over twenty months. I may here remark, that the ground not considered payable twenty months ago, or even now, may be considered in a different light some years hence. To my own personal knowledge there are two parties prepared to bring in to the banks of the river at the south end of the township. One of them, lam informed, applied to the Warden at the time the recent survey was being made. ' • In reference to Mr. Hickaon's next statement, viz., that those against whose names he placed a X had no interest or habitation in the township, I need simply say that all those referred t to have more or less interest in it. One of those i .against whose name he placed a X (Mr. j R Boyd) owns a carpenter's shop, and is part-owner of a dwelling house. Anojther (Mr. W. Williams, since left) had a shoe- | maker's shop ; the others are miners resident in the township. " Mr. Hickson again refers to one of the memorialists (I presume Mr. J. I Brossly) as not having authorised hi 3 ! name to be signed. I may here remark, that Mrs. Bossly signed th* memorial in the absence of her husband, and further, that Mrs. Bjssly is authorised by her hnsbahd to transact business in his absence, which I am prepared to show. "Respecting the statements which I have made here, I, in common with the other memorialists, are at anytime fully prepared to substantiate, as also othera in the memorial. ........ «' <3rBO»aB MACSAT* 5*5 *
