TUAPEKA HOSPITAL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Hospital Committee was held in the Surgeon's residence, at the Hospital, on Monday evening, the 29th ult. Present — H. Bastings, Esq., President (in the chair), Messrs. Hay, M'Nickle, Henderson, Farrar, Russell, Brown, M'Swiney, Smith, and Dr. Stewart. After the minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, a conversation took place respecting the Secretary to the Hospital. An extraordinary meeting had been held since last Committee meet ing, at which it was decided that the President should call upon Mr. Richards and ask him to resign his appointment as Secretary. Mr. Bastings stated that he had called upon him, and he (the Secretary) said he had no objection to do so, since the Committee were not satisfied with him ; only, in the event of his sending in his resignation, he must be paid his half year's salary, up to December, which amounted to £17 10s. After this statement by the President to the Committe, a conversation ensued, in the course of which it was acknowledged that the Committee had neither power to dismiss the Secretary, nor, in the event of his sending in his resignation, had they the power to pay £17 10s. of public money, as his salary to the end of the year. The following course was, therefore, at last adopted — That Mr. Richards having refused to accede to the desire of the Committee, the whole matter be reported to the next meeting of subscribers, leaving them to deal with the case. A letter was read from Mr. Richards respecting some business of the Hospital ; also a letter from Mr. Lomas, informing the Committee that the late John Elliot had left a family in Victoria ; but as this letter did not contain any application, it was simply received, and the Secretary instructed to reply to it, mentioning that fact. Messrs. Meyer and Russell were appointed auditors. Mr. Henderson, as one of the Visiting Committee, stated that the garden was very much neglected ; and he thought it would be far better to let the garden to some one who understood something about it. There were nearly two acres inside the f«nce. The President thought the matter should be left to a sub-committee to report upon the same at next meeting. It was finally arranged that the matter should be left in the hands of the Visiting Committee. The tender-box was then opened, and the following tenders read :—: — Meat. — Lyng, beef, with or without bone, 4|d. ; mutton, 4d. ; shins of beef, 4|d.
