PRESBYTERY OF CLUTHA.

This Presbytery met at Balclutha on Wednesday, the 17th inst. Present : The Rev. Mr. Waters, Moderator, Rev. Messrs. Todd, JBannerman, Kirkland, Allan, Copland, Ross, and Telford, ministers ; and Messrs. Adam, Todd, and Sutherland, Elders. The Rev. Mr. Dickson, who is presently supplying Balclutha, was associated with the Presbytery. The first part of the meeting was occupied with the usual annual examinaion of the records of th* Kirk Sessions and Deacons' Courts within the bounds. TOKOMAIRIRO. An overture from the Kirk Session of Tokomairiro was read, praying the Presbytery to take steps towards forming a new ministerial charge embracing Lovel's Flat, Tuakitoto, Mount Stewart, and Glenore. Mr. Adam supported the overture, expressing th« desire of the Kirk Session to release Mr. Todd of part of his duties, which at present extended over several of the districts named on the overture. The Presbytery, having considered the overture, resolved that, for the present, they deem it inexpedient to take steps to form a new charge as suggested ; and further resolved to endeavor to supply Lovel's Plat more efficiently with the means of grace, according to the resolution of Synod, which sanctioned Balclutha as a regular charge with Lovel's Flat, as a station attached to it for the present ; and further appointed a deputation to visit Balclutha and Lovel's ( Flat, with the vieAv of explaining matters and making arrangements for the future, j the deputation to consist of Messrs. Todd and Waters. BALCLUTHA AND LOVBL'S PLAT?. It was agreed to apply to the Church Extension Committee to appoint the Rev. Mr. Dickson to supply Balclutha and Lovel's Mutt for" next three months. ALEXANDRA AND CLYDE* A letter from the secretary of the Alexandra and Clyde congregation was read, praying the Presbytery to sanction their application for the usual grant in aid of manse building. The Presbytery appointed a committee, consisting of the Rev. Messrs. Todd, Copland, and Telford, to examine the plan and specifica* tion of the xnause, and if satisfied, to report to the Clerk of Presbytery, in order to give instruction to the trustees that the congregation is entitled to the usual grant. POPOTUNOA. The Presbytery resolved to apply to the Church Extension Committee to appoint a preacher to labor in Popotunoa for the next three months. It was also agreed that, until a preacher should be sent to the district, the members of the Presbytery should give ministerial service once a month, in rotation. The Rev. Mr, Bannerman was accordingly appointed to preach there on Sabbath week, the last Sabbath of June. The Rev. Dr. Copland gave notice of the following motion, to be brough forward at next meeting :— " That this Presbytery overture the Synod to determine that, in the event of the Synod's agreeing to create a professorship in connection with the proposed college in Dunedin, to be supported out of the Fund for Religious and Educational Uses ; the profesiorship to be created shall be devoted to the teaching of Philosophy on the Cognate Subjects." The Presbytery adjourned to meet in Lawrence Church on the third Wednesday of September next, at 12 o'clock.
