TUAPEKA GOLDFIELDS HOSPITAL
The Hospital Committee held their monthly meeting on Tuesday evening last. Present : Messrs. Bastings (in the chair), M'Nickle, Smith, Farrer, Lyng, Chalmers, M'Cluskey, M'Swiney, ' Potts, Russell. The Secretary read a letter which he had forwarded, in accordance with instructions from Committee, to the Provincial Secretary, with reference to the insuring of the Hospital ; but he had not yet received a reply. He also read a letter to Mr. M'Oluskey, askiug him to. make enquiry as to -the estate _o£ John Elliot, who had been a patient in the Hospital. Mr. M'Cluskey stated that he had seen * Mr. Shaw, but he could not give any definite information as to the extent of Elliot' 3 effects. There was a horse and saddle ; but he (Mr. Shaw) would not lake upon himself to administer in the case. Mr. M'Swiney thought it important to take time by the forelock, if any person should be trying to act unfairly, and suggested the necessity ot the Committee sending some one specially to Waipori to enquire into the matter. Mr. Farrer proposed — " That the Secretary be instructed to write to Mr. Strode, stating the circumstances of the case, and asking how to proceed, and •what action a local committee could take in regard to the claim." The quarterly return which was submitted at the general meeting, was read. A letter from the Secretary of the Tapanui Hall Committee, was read, also the Hospital Secretary's reply to the same. A letter from Mr. Higgins, enclosing £5 2s. 6d., was also read. A letter to Waipori, enclosing pamphlets, was read. This completed all the correspondence the Secretary had to lay before the Committee. Mr. Farrer said that he had received a letter from the Secretary of s the Benevolent Asylum, with regard to the patient Poison whom the Committee recommended to the Asylum. Poison had received an order for admittance, but had not availed himself of it. Dr. Stewart spoke of another patient, a very similar case to Poison's, more fitted for the Benevolent Asylum than the Hospital. Mr. Farrer did not think it would be judicious to take any action in that case, for a time. Mr. Potts then moved — "That the subscription lists for the year be issued." The motion was seconded and carried, and the Secretary instructed to forward lists to all those gentlemen who had them last year, and several others besides. Mr. Wong Ong and Mr. Duncan Campbell were appointed as Chinese collectors. It was moved and seconded that Mr. Nicholson's name be put on the Mount Benger list of collectors. Mr. Potts was the next on the list of the Visiting Committee, which now consists of Messrs. Resell, Lyng, Henderson, and Potts. With reference to a new ward in the Hospital, for lunatics and other refractory patients, Mr. Russell moved, and Mr. Mr. Potts seconded—" That Mr. Hughes and the Members of Council for the Goldfields be written to, with reference to the great necessity which exists in the Hospital for an extra ward for refractory patients, asking them to take such steps as wil] lead to the erection of one." Mr, Farrer said that if they got three l to one this year, they would require tc * build a ward themselves, but if they did not get .three to one, the Government would need to build it. ' Dr. Stewart drew the attention of tht L Visiting Committee to the females ward, ■ which required repairs. hfcjTtoWvtiof theu closed.
