MOUNT BENGER.

On 'Wednesday evening last an important public meeting was held in tho Union Hotel, Teviot, for the purpose of urging npon Government tha necessity that * reigns supreme ' for opening the fertile lands of the district for bona fide permanent settlement. It is a matter of regret that no advance has been made by the Executive towards an adjustment of this long suspended vital question which, in the opinion of those who have the interests of the Province at heart, ought to have the first claim on their attention. The speakers, Messrs. Mervyn, M. H, ft., in the chair, Beigbton, Mackay, Ireland, M'Lachlan and Marsh, spoke with great earnestness on the subject, and depricated, in measured terms the motionless activity of our paternal G-overn-ment, in reference to the all-absorbing question, which demands immediate settlement, on a sound political basis. The following resolutions were unanimouslyadopted :— " First That this meeting desirea to express surprise and regret at the repeated delays on the part of the Gowramest, in taking the necessary •tops to procure the opening up of the lands for settlement in this district." Second : — " That the following gentlemen be a committee for the purpose of embodying the sentiments of -this meeting in the form of » memorial to the Provincial Council, at present in session, such committee to consist of Messrs. Mervjn, Hoyle, Ireland, and Anderson." Third :—": — " That the requirements of this district, demands that land should be immediately thrown open, to meet the pressing wants of the residents, and thereby to prevent thrir leaving the kistrict as heretofore." Fourth : — " That a reserve of at least fifteen chaius along the river bank be reserved for Oiiniug purposes." Fifth; — " That the chairman be authorised to ejgn the memorial to the Provincial Council pn behalf of this meeting."
