The Tuapeka Times. "Measures, not Men." SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 1868.
We are informed that Mr. Inspector Morton has left the Police Force. We have heard rumors that he has not been treated fairly, and we have every reason to believe that justice has not been rendered to him. Is it because, in the performance of Jiis duties, he took a firm step in'
bringing to justice the members of the Force, who degraded it by their villanous conduct, that he receives this reward for his seven years meritorious services to the province ofOtago, ever since the formation of the Force. We learn with satis- ( faction that some influential gentlemen in the Tuapeka district, who appreciate the valuable services of Mr. Morton, have determined to enquire thoroughly into the cause of his leaving. It is said that Mr. Morton i& to receive compensation, but this, if not rather strange, certainly proves that there is nothing against Jus conduct, otherwise such compensation would not be given. But, we would ask, what is a paltry compensation to a man with a wife and family who are to be cast upon the world, And further, we would ask, who has taken the responsibility of dispensing with the^ services of an officer whose experience and value to the Province, are of perhaps more value than those of any other officer in the Force. We hope most sincerely the Council will not permit injustice to be done to even the lowest member of the police. If the members of that body do not know that justice will be rendered to them when it is due, a system of degradation and tryanny will certainly prevail.
