LAWRENCE ATHENÆUM.

A meeting of the Athenaeum Committee met on Saturday evening. Present :— Messrs. Brown, Marshall, Morison, Hayes, and Stenhouse. As Mr. Tolcher, the Secretary, was not present, . Mr. Hayes was unanimously elected Secretary for the evening. Mr. Morison was called to the chair. Mr. Brown moved, and Mr. StenPc seconded, " That 100 bills and tickets for Mr. Smith's lecture be printed at the most moderate price, as the expenses attending Mr. Smith's lecture were not likely to be remunerative for the Athenaeum." The bills to be printed because of the indefinite description of the advertisement of the lecture which had appeared, the name of the subject not being mentioned. It was then resolved " That a telegram be sent to Mr. Smith, enquiring the name of the subject upon which he proposed lecturing." The Secretary was then instructed to arrangements with the School Com-

mittee for the use of the school-room, and with the Lawrence Church of England Committee for the use of the lamps on the evening of the lecture. Mr. Marshall was appointed to attend to the printing of the bills and tickets and to distribution of the same. Mr. Brown signified his willingness to receive Mr. Smith and see to his accommodation, and Mr. Morison to have the school-room properly arranged. Mr. Brown stated that he had seen Mr Hislop with reference to the amount granted for the Athenaeum, and that he had arranged with him that the sum would not lapse, although it should not be applied for before the end of the month. It was then moved by Mr. Marshaia, and seconded by Mr. Brown, " That tenders for the erection of the Athenaeum Building be called for on or before Saturday, the 28th inst., at five o'clock, the lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted." Carried. The Secretary was appointed to see to the necessary advertisement appearing in next week's issue of the paper. A vote of thanks having been given to the Chairman, the meeting dissolved.
