(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times).

Sir, — I beg, in reply to a letter that appeared in your last week's issue, to ask your indulgence for a little space for a few lines. Mr. "Piper" points out the scarcity of wcod> and the long distance it has to be catted. Sir, the distance is not so great, if the money that has already been granted were judiciously spent. By improving the road the wood carts would be able to go to the bush -and ' come back in one day, which at present takes two days, and as that must •affect the price of wood, I sincerely hope that the work will be carried out immediately, as I am credibly informed the money is ready for that purpose, and the s\ ins' T uctions given, so that the work must 1 |lgo on, luA as much interested in the j»ji at.c Tapa p ur "Piper" can be. This t •'■"; -}• a], ue I have bought about thirty \ >-ry-"r-TTTC^^-t"£3 103. per cord ; and r- \ ild -_• €.-rtf r^on able to go and come |\i o. •:. -iiy. iiin iad of two, there would % -j^lv.n,' _ at difference in the price O f food to me. I hope the work will be \ % before the winter, so as to get .^ .» ne d an d passable before the wet r-»\' t&tner. With reference to a weighbridge, it is much needed, and I believe the Council does intend taking the matter up. lam sure it would be a great benefit to Lawrence, and give greater satisfaction to all, and that at a very small cost. Piper states that if he pays for a ton of coals, he likes to know that he gets a ton. I may say that it is not common to weigh •coals at a pit ; but in Lawrence the coal trade is a retailing business, so that a weighbridge is very accessary to give all parties fair play, and do justice to the public. I can pretty nearly judge a ton of coal, but neither I nor any other person can guess exactly the quantity. If "Piper" has got a suitable piece of ground situated near the bottom of Peelstreet, or aear the top of Ross Place, I think it would be a very good speculation for private enterprise; ano if he thinks the matter worth while, I am willing to join with him, so that he can see me on the subject privately at any time. Yours respectfully, Geoiuje Walker.
