INCREASING SETTLEMENT ON THE LANDS OF THE WAKATIP DISTRICT.

When the Wakatip was first fairly opened, in 1862, the lands were in the occupation of the squatter, and* civilisation and settlement wera altogether out of the question. » * * * * Actual settlement commenced about eighteen months ago. Up tci the present, over 12,000 acres of land have been applied for, and applications are still pouring in. Over 100,000 acre 3 have been surveyed by the local officers of the department — a fact whi?h in itself spe»ks - well, considering ths number of mm; leases also dealt with. We, are not i: position to give the actual quantity fenc in, or of the quantity broken up, but ie \ v find in round numbers that some 720 \ acres of wheat will, within 'the next few \ days, be gathered in under most promis- \ ing circumstances of weather and condi- \ tion. The farmers are calculating the \ yield very liigh, — nothing under forty bushels per acre ; byt if we take ii at thirty-five busliels per acre, we find a yield of 25,200 bushels, ' or at forty-five bushels for a ton of flour, 560 tons of flour, which, at £20 per ton, in worth £11,200.
