ST ALBANS V. OLD COLLEGIANS.

St. Albans and Old Collegians commenced their match at Hagley Park this afternoon, in perfect weather, the pitch and outfield being good. Collegians won the toss for the sixth time in succession, and Lester and W. J. V. Hamilton opened their innings against the bowling of Norrie and Sandman. Collegians were without the services of I. M. Hamilton, who has strained a knee. Runs came steadily, though Lester was dropped behind the wicket off Norrie before he had reached double figures. Lester hit a beautiful six to square leg off Sandman. An hour's play saw 63 runs on for no wickets. Shortly after, Thomas clean bowled Hamilton. Bruges joined Lester, and started scoring with powerful drives. He was missed in slips when 14. Sandman got him two balls later lbw. 90—2—19. The century went up after 100 minutes’ play, Lester driving Thomas to the off boundary. A few balls later he was caught behind the wicket off Sandman for an invaluable 49. Lawrence was the newcomer. Sandman got another victim, Chrystall going for a hit and being stumped. 108 —4—7. Lawrence carried on brightly, hitting a good six off Sandman. Burrows cleanfowled Ayling in his second over. <!—l c. Oliver jumped out to Merritt And Carleton had the bails off in a flash. I©—2—o. W. Cunningham went in. Robertson then opened out, lifting Merritt high to the on boundary for a six, following it with a fine four to leg off

the next ball. A good one from Burrows sent him back next over. 24—3 I IS. Cunningham was then joined by Wallburton, who failed to stay, lifting one from Burrows to Cromb, who held an easy catch. With four wickets down for 28, things were looking bad for Sydenham. Burrows’s average was now three for 3. Gasson was Merritt’s second victim, Carleton again being the agent. 41—5—5. Meanwhile Cunningham was batting verv well, .and he ran into doubles with a square cut. off a short one from Burrows. Shortly after he was dropped bv Killiek off the same howler. W. Oliver and Cunningham added 21 for the sixth wicket before the latter tapped a leg break from Merritt to Burrows. 62—6—14. An extra good one from Burrows beat Philpott all the way. 67—7—3. The first bowling change was made witli the score in the eighties, Cromb relieving Merritt at the pavilion end and Powell taking over from Burrows. The change proved effective, Cromb bowling Here in his second over with a fast, ■ short-pitched ball. 98 —B—lo.8—10. King ! brought up the century with a boundary off Powell. Oliver went at last, Powell holding a catch off Merritt. 125—9—39. The last-wicket partnership was a hectic affair. King hitting a couple of sixes.
