BACK-IN PARKING.
To the Editor. Sir,—May I make a Suggestion concerning angle parking as now applied to motors in this city. On Wednesday I left a cycle standing against the kerb in Manchester Street. After five minutes, on going to mount, I found that a car which had been parked according to the new rules, had “got away,” and squashed my good cycle, necessitating repairs costing 16s 6d. I am aware that cyclists have no claim on motorists because of there being no parking rights for the former. This shows the unsuitability of this city with its present hi#h-crowned roads and ditches for gutters for headon kerb parking. Another thing is the danger of passing tarffic when backing out to take up one’s running again in the motor. One may be just engaging the clutch when traffic compels one to hold for a few seconds; while holding there is danger of running forward and having the trouble of getting out over again. This leads to my suggestion. Why not ask that motorists run along the street, say. two yards ahead of the chosen parking position, and then bring the wheel over onto the left lock, and run back. To my mind this would be simpler and less dangerous, as one woi.ld come away from the parking position ahead, thus being able to sight traffic better, and it is easier to drive a car ahead than back no matter how good the driver. The parking would be simpler, for when backing into the kerb there is no traffic at the rear of the car. In this manner our ditch-gutters would be of benefit for the could not get on to the footpath. Sydney motorists park this way. We bank on the help of the “Star” in this most difficult problem. ■—l am, etc.,
