RACING NOTES.
fSic carton stables will be well represented at the Wellington Club's meeting:. Sixteen horses from local stables have engagements on the opening day, and there are others who will not be seen until later in the fixture. Most of the Riccarton horses who are to race at Trentham will leave for the North by to-night's ferry steamer. The Riccarton pair, Paperchase and Booster, will command a lot of suppart in sprint events at Trentham. * * * »Je Hawke’s Bay stables claim several smart gallopers—the leading sprint races at the Wellington meeting. The Hawk must always be considered seriously* while Mimetic, High Pitch and Shirley are a trio with excellent credentials. * * * * Orchid was one of the disappointments of the holiday meetings in the North Island. He has developed lameness since his return to his home quarters at Trentham. * * * Jjt Grand Knight has had an easy time since he got back to Trentham. lie did not realise expectations at Auckland during the holidays, but he is now picking up in a manner which suggests improved form very soon. * * * ss The three-year-old .Arch Arrow, by Arrowsmith from Loyal Arch, has joined A. Goodman's team at Trentham. He has been sprinting well lately and he may carry the colours of Mr H. W. Brown with credit later in the season. The owner of Arrowsmith, Air 11. W. Brown, was recently approached to name a price at which he would sell the English-bred horse, bue he declined the overture. Arrowsmith has sired a few winners and several of his progeny are viewed in a promising light.
A yearling that is highly spoken of in Taranaki is a filly by Chief Ruler from Silver Link, and thus a b a ’f-sister to Silvermine. I
The first batch of yearlings for the Trentham Sales next week has arrived and been installed in the new boxes. The} 7 are from Mr G. M. Currie’s stud. In all 105 boxes with feed rooms, etc., have been erected and the finishing touches are now being put on what will be a very fine property.
The committee of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club has decided to plough up the course proper at Hastings after the next June meeting. The work will not be undertaken before it was necessary, the race track when seen a few days ago being a poor advertisement for a metropolitan club.
According to a Wanganui writer The Thorn is not to race again until the Wanganui Cup meeting? He was not wound up for the Auckland meeting and it was decided not to overtax him for the present. Previous to going north and while at Ellerslie the son of Absurd—Rose Queen was doing excellent work over sprint courses and there is reason to think that he will be better than ever when thoroughly tuned up. * i'fi ;je * A North Island writer says there may be some trouble over the ownership of a horse that won a race at the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christmas meeting. sje :Jc # * That hack events are very hard to win on many occasions is shown by the fact that Royal Mint, Lacfy Anstruther and Tip Tree all met defeat in hack ciass at New Plymouth, yet at the Stratford meeting the trio named beat good class handicap performers in the principal open races. This is further exemplified by the recent successes of Royal Damon, who has done much better in open company than in back company. >•= * sje sjc Degage now represents an unknown quantity, but if her training on the beach at Porirua has proved satisfactory such a sterling galloper is not overburdened with Bst Sib in the Wellington Cup. For all that she will have a good deal against her in meeting a field of seasoned performers, as she has not had a race for a long time. * * * It is reported that the Awapuni trainer H. Doyle, purchased the exOtago gelding, Buoyant, from Mr E. L. Riddiford during the Manawatu meeting. * * * * Mask and Mandane were two Wa- < nganui failures at Ellerslie. Mask looked well but raced badly. He is a peculiar horse, however, and may recoved his form just as quickly. Mandane’s sex is probably against her and it is possible she will be a better proposition in the autumn. * * * * Piuthair's failure at Ellershe can be excused, for she was not quite herself. Mr R. A. Mackenzie’s other mare, Clarinda, requires a really firm track to be at her best. * * * Lady Cavendish was not herself at Ellerslie. She almost fell at the start of the Railway Handicap and. produced again on the third day, failed to muster up any dash. This was not her real form, and if she is taken to Trentham she should do better.
TROTTING NOTES. Lady Embrace is doing her training work in good style. This mare has now settled down and become much more docile at the post. She has not yet raced up to expectations over two miles, but has some speedy performances to her credit over short courses. Logan Lily is one of the improving sort who should show further improvement before the end of the season.- She is pacing well in her work. * * * * Nelson Derby appears to have done well on his northern trip, although he did not race up to expectations. He seems quite sound and is pacing freely in his work. * * * * W. J. Tomkinson’s new arrival, Conclift, is a quality-looking pacer who seems to possess plenty of speed. He appears to be well-mannered and a free goer. In a workout during the week with Napland and Nelson Derby he paced resolutely all the way. * * * * Becky Logan does not seem to be quite so bright as formerly, and she is hard!;,- working as brilliantly as she did a few months ago. She now appears to be quite sound, however. * :Js * Lad;- Fan has improved a good deal during the season and is now a very ttseful trotter. She seems to be hard to get back to her gait, however, when she goes to a break. Mc.b is a young pacer who looks like developing into a good two-miler. She has an easy action and is pacing attractively in her training work. Bertha Bingen is being kept steadily at it in training, but so far she has not raced up to expectations. She has got to make a lot of improvement to reach the point attained by her brothers, Great Bingen and Peter Bingen. Bertha Bingen may develop more speed with age. * * * * The trotter Young Blake has never looked better. He has improved in his manners on the track this season, and also now gets into his gait quicker after going to a break. Young Blake has great speed and once he thoroughly controls it will win in any company. P. Riddle deserves a lot oi credit for the way he has persevered with the fast but erratic trotter.
Napland did not race up to expectations at the recent Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting. This fine trotter, although doing his work solidly at present, seems to lack some of his old-time brilliancy. Napland is working well and appears to be liking his work. He should nqfc be long before winning a race. * * * * St Maura continues to please the critics by thja manner in which she gets through her training work. St Maura has improved a great deal since coming to Addington. * * * * Happy Rosa is trotting with all her usual freedom and dash. Although she has improved in racing manners she has not yet shown her best in a race. * * * * Rose Pointer looks as though she wants a lot more work before being at her best. This fast pacer should show improvement in her next effort. * * * * N. L. Price brought Transport for a work-out at Addington during the week. Although the pacer was not successful at the recent Auckland Club's meeting, he paced consistently and will probably be successful in the near future. * * * + Surfboard looks bright and well and was responsible for a good work-out during the week at Addington. St * !£ * Queen Ida, although she has done a fair amount of racing during the season, looks on the big side. She is trotting well in her work. * * * * T. G. Fox was unlucky with Nelson Boy at Auckland, as the trotter contracted a very bad cold and was a long way from his best at the meeting. WANGANUI NOTES. (Special to the “Star.”) WANGANUI, January 15. i The weather was fine for training ope- • rations yesterday, and some good gallops were put up by horses engaged at, Trentham and P'oxton. The track was very fast. Thaw and the half-brother by California to Civility were companions in a four-furlong spin, which they cut out in olsec, the former doing it easilv. Mask, looking bright and well after his trip to Ellerslie, ran six furlongs very nicely in Imm 16sec, cutting out the first half in 50isec. He was bowling along in great style at the finish, and although he disappointed at Ellerslie he should get into the money at Trentham. Lysander is evidently none the worse for his. run over the Derby distance at Ellerslie. He was slipped over four furlongs, and with a light boy up, and had full pace on when he reached the peg, he .ran the first furlong in 11 1 -ssec, and the quarter in 22 3-ssec. Tie had to face a head wind in the straight, but ran out the half in a tick over 4Sscc. Lysander is to run in the Wellington Stakes, and yesterday’s gallop is proof that he is as fit as ever. Paleta was not asked to do his best over halt a mile, which he left behind in 51 3-ssec. Civility (with J. Head in the saddle) was responsible for a brilliant --fi'ort over six furlongs. She ran the first quarter in a shade under 23scio, three furlongs in 35sec. and the full journey in Jmin 13 2-ssec. The last halfmile took 49 3-ssec, and the last five furlongs in 60 3-ssee. The Thom (with a light-weight) and Deluge (W. Raynor) ran four furlongs
in 49gsec, the former being a shade in front, but the chestnut was going well ■within himself. Break o’ Day had Great Dav as a companion in a five furlong flutter, the time registered being lmin ssec, the latter being in front, but Break o’ Day could have done better. Great Dav will race at Trentham, and Break o’ Day at Foxton. Bent was sent seven furlongs, but was under a pull all the way, the time registered being lmin 35sec. She looks well, and must have an outside chance in the Foxton Cup. After breakfast, Alloway (Knapp) was sent five furlongs at ail easy pace, taking 26 3-ssec for the first two, and 39 2-ssec for the last three, the five furlongs occupying lmin 6sec. The Limond gelding is to go to Trentham to contest the middle distance handicap events on the second and third days. He is not engaged the first day. W. Rayner leaves on Monday with Lysander, Mask, Deluge and Thaw for Trentham. They are all in excellent trim, and if the going is firm will all run well in their engagements. Thaw is considered well handicapped in the Fitzberbert Handicap. F. Tilley's team is also due to leave on Monday. Limited is expected to run a big race in the Wellington Stakes, the distance of which is to hi's liking. Like Lysander, he is very fast off the mark, and this pair will probably have a great race over five furlongs, though Lysander's chance is more favoured, despite the fact that he will be carrying a 101 b penalty. B. Bennett, who fomcrly owned and trained Halberdier and other good ones, has Left, by Martian-Lovelorn, in work in view of racing her at Wanganui next month. At liawera yesterday, Siivermine and Orazone gallopsed five furlongs in lmin 2 4-ssec. Silvermine is expected to put up his best performance in the Wellington Stakes, but will have a tough proposition to head off Lysander and Limited. In a mile gallop, Seatown did not out with his usual freedom, taking lmin 48sec, but if allowed to take things fairly easy, he should be nil right at Trentham. Bonognc ran three furlongs very smartly. He has freshened up, and might get on the winning list at Foxton. The star gallop of the morning was between Reremoana and Lady Cavendish. The latter had the advantage in the early part, but Reremoana, with the advantage in weights, was doing *it l>cst, the time being lmin 2 l-ssec. The last four furlongs were run in
AUCKLAND NOTES.
TAKAPUNA PROSPECTS. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLANDN, January 15. The weights have been issued by Mr W. Russell for the Takapuna meeting In the Cup Ruapapa heads the handicap with 9st. He won the Alison Cup at the last meeting and on the second day was just beaten by Princess Ronnie in the St Andrew’s Handicap, of nine furlongs, in which he carried 9st With Bst lib in the Summer Cup at Ellerslie last month he was well beaten, finishing about tenth, while he failed to show up in the A.R.C. Handicap, of one mile and a half, when weighted at Bst 4 lb. On the last day of the meeting he was given Bst 11b in the Grandstand Handicap, one mile and a quarter, and he finished well back. Eden Hall raced well at the A.R.C. spring meeting and also at the Waikato meeting, but failed to get into the money in the Summer Cup nt Ellerslie. He has been awarded 11b less than Ruapapa, but both this pair may find it hard to concede the weight-ask-ed of them to some of those lower down. Desert Glow has not done much since running second in the New Zealand Cup. In the Auckland Cup he showed up till the straight was reached. In the A.R.C. Handicap, with 7st 101 b, he finished fourth, while with lib more he was third in the Grandstand Handicap, of one mile and a quarter on the concluding day. He has been raised to Bst 81b, but even with that impost his chances appear t.o be pretty good. Desert Glow won the Cup last year with 7st. Master Doon won the Waikato Cup, one mile and a half, last November. Day Guard has run well over a mile and he beat a good field in the Christmas Handicap at Ellerslie. Later on in the A.R.C. Handicap, with 7st 71b, he was one of the leaders for most of : the way, but finished well back. Mr
Russell has now awarded him Sst 41b. Ilipo annexed the Christmas Handicap, one mile and a quarter nt the Taranaki meeting under Sst 41b, while a few weeks previous to that he was second in the Levin Cup of a similar distance with Sst 21b, being beaten by Diogenes. Town Bank has won over a mile and a half, but he has not done anything this season. If he was at. his best he would have a chance with Sst lib. Mosaic has yet to go a mile and a half, but he won the Goldfields Cup, one mile, two furlongs and 56 yards, with 7st 31b. lie raced well at the A.R.C. summer meeting and his performance in getting second to Seatown in the Grandstand Handicap was a good one. Nippy has not shown up lately, while Barometer was second to Rapine in the Summer Cup. On that occasion he carried 7st 2* lb, while he has now been raised to 7st 101 b. Princess Ronnie has won over a mile and a quarter and at the last Takapuna meeting annexed the St Andrew's Handicap, of nine furlongs. Spoony, Lomint, Lord Star, and Papatu may be the best of the*, others. Probably Desert Glow, Ilipo, Eden Hall, Barometer, Master Doon and Lord Star may appeal most just now. With the exception of Oration, the sprinters engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap at Takapuna are from the Auckland province but, nevertheless there is plenty of material lor a good race. In assesing the merits of those engaged by Mr W. Russell, the handicapper, has placed Aussie on top with 9st. At Ellerslie he was fourth in the
Railway Handicap, carrying 7st 3£lb. and with lib more he won the Electric Handicap in good style on the second day. On the following day he was raised to Bst 41b, and finished fifth. Royal Blood has not raced for a long time, but the handicapper is taking no risks in putting Sst 111 b on him. King Merv showed up at the Avondale and Takapuna meetings in sprint events without winning, while at Ellers lie he was fifth in the Railway Handicap, and occupied a similar position in the Bowen Handicap. Cawnpore failed to get nearer than third in his Australian engagements and at Ellerslie he did not get into the money at all. Master Doon is engaged in the Cup as well this event but, if at his best, he might be troublesome with Sst 61b.' Dave is a good sprinter and has performed well this season. With Bst 41b he will not be neglected. Ruffles won well on two occasions at the last Takapuna meeting, the last being when he annexed the open sprint with the minimum. With 7st 81b in 1 the Railway Handicap he was about tenth. He has now Sst 41h, but this should not prevent him running -i good race. r Kingfield was third in the Railwa--Handicap with 7st 21b and he has only j
to repeat that form to be in the firing line at the finish. Oration won a six furlong event at the Stratford meeting recently, while Archeen scored in the chief sprint event on the first da}’ of the last Takapuna meeting and finished third on the next day. He did not perform prominently at the A.R.C. summer meeting. Chairman, Tea Bell and Serang may perhaps prove the best of the others. Probably Ruffles, Kingfield, Archeen, Dave, King Merv and Aussie may be most fancied just now.
TROTTING HANDICAPS.
TIGHTENING UP CLASSES. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, January 15. With a moderate like Peter M'Donald handicapped at 276 yards behind in a mile and a half at Te Aroha. it is quite evident that the time has arrived when country clubs should seriously consider the tightening up of the limits. There should be no place on any programme for horses who cannot go better than 2.40 to the mile. As a matter of fact it would be almost impossible to find a horse in training who could not knock seconds off 2.40. The moderate horse should certainly be catered for, but there should be no consideration for horses who are fitted only for a baker’s cart, for that is the proper place for a 2.40 horse. It might be a good move if country club committees when drawing up future programmes considered imposing » limit at both ends. It would do away with anythnig like asking horses to give away 276 yards in a mile and a half. Although one or two owners, particularly those who had horses running into a place at the Northland meeting, are not altogether pleased with the assessments made by Mr C. Gooseman for the Te Aroha meeting, he seems to have made very satisfactory handicaps, and the general opinion of trainers and owners is that there is little cause to complain. One thing Mr Gooseman apparently is going to do is to handicap horses on the times down against theifi, irrespective of opinions about one track being faster than another. It is not so very long ago when trainers were emphatic that the only satisfactory way to handicap was to adhere strictly to the times registered by horses, and they can have no growl if Mr Goosman does what they have been advocating. There is this to be said for such a system: Owners and trainers know exactly what mark their horses will be on when they enter them for a race. That one or two horses at Te Aroha appear to be badly treated is not the fault of Mr Gooseman, but the result of the classes being made too slow.
