Mr and Mrs H. Crust have returned to Christchurch from a visit to Wellington. Miss Inez Lewton, Southbridge, is spending a holiday with Mrs F. Henderson at Temuka. Miss Bull, of Christ’s College, is the guest of her sister, Mrs E. Hall, Waipukurau. Miss Theunice Brook and Miss Jean Gillies are returning to the North Island after a holiday spent with Mrs T. Haberfield, of Riccarton. Miss Ethel Le Cren, Timaru, who is the guest of Miss Rona Matson, Papanui Road, will return to the south early next week. ! Miss Rachel Iloson, Southbridge, j who has been the guest of Nurse Howson. Merivale, will leave shortly for Ashburton. Miss Ivy Green, West Coast, who has been visiting relatives at Southbridge, left this week to spend a holiday in .Lyttelton. Miss Thelma Watson, Feudal ton, and Miss Glance Ilerron, Oamaru, are spending a holiday with relatives at “ Mount Pleasant,” Little Rakaia. Mrs H. M’Pherson, “ Te Aro,” Sedgemere, left this week for the West Coast to visit her daughter, Mrs Norman Densem. Mr and Mrs C. Lucas, Opawa, and Miss Grady, Wellington, are spending a short holiday at Ocean View' Hotel, Governor’s Bay. Mrs W. J. Biggins and Miss Myrtle Biggins, of Westenra Street, Dallington, have left on a holiday trip to Stewart Island. Miss C. Lowe, of Christchurch, has been on a holiday visit to Waipukurau, where she was the guest of Mrs J. Gibson. The Misses Naomi and Agatha Bailey and Miss Doris Payne, who have been spending a holiday in the North Island, have returned to Rangiora. Mr and Mrs P. J. Werren, Riccarton. accompanied by Mrs and Miss Werren, left by car on Tuesday on a holiday tour. The trip will include Marlborough and the West Coast districts. Miss Isa Cookson, Auckland, who has been on an extended holiday with friends in the Ellesmere district, left this week for Ha warden, North Canterbury. The engagement is announced of Gladys Helen, only daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Howie, of Linwood, and Hugh Douglas, only son of Mr C. W. Purchas, of Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Charles Maddren and Misses Thelma and Kura Maddren, who have been for a three weeks’ motor tour to Kaikoura. ‘Marlborough and Nelson, have returned home. Mrs J. R. Home, Timaru, who was in town for the Squire-Matthews wedding, is spending a short holiday with Mr and Mrs J. E. Home, Sumner, before returning to Timaru. Mr and Mrs R. J. Bailey, Temuka, left on Wednesday for their new home, Richardson Terrace, Opawa. Before leaving, Mr Bailey was met by friends and presented with a handsome shaving outfit. Mrs J. C. Bradshaw, Cashmere, is staying at Peel Forest. Miss Lulu Mnrioc, Wellington, is the guest, of Mrs W. S. Bean, The Vicarage, Addington. Mr and Mrs J. Robertson, Christchurch, are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp r Geraldine, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and leaves to-day with her family for a holiday, visit to Akaroa. Mr Alex Dickie and Miss Rona Alleyne are on holiday in the Ellesmere district. They are guests of Miss Grcenan, Doyleston. Misses Edna and Agnes Bishop, of Tinwalrl, are spending a holiday with Mi ss K. Green an, “ Erin's Isle Farm”, Doyleston. The engagement is announced of Margaret Noble, younger daughter of the Hon Mr Justice Adams and Mrs Adams, to Crosby Standish, only son of Mrs Morris and the late Mr' A. W. Morris. Among the recent holiday visitors to Mrs Constable’s, “ Whangamareno," Governor’s Bay. were:—Mrs and Miss Triggs. Mr and Mrs Burrows, Mrs Hunt and Mrs Ross, Miss Talbot, Messrs M’Beth and Bates, Christchurch; Mr and Mrs Rogan, Dunedin; Mr and Mrs Thomson, Auckland. Mrs Henrietta Anspach, who passed away on Monday last, at the age of sixty-six years, was the daughter of John Bengo, late veterinary surgeon to Queen Victoria. She was born at Kingston-on-Thames in 1860, and had resided in New Zealand for twentyseven years. She is survived b} r her husband, one son, two daughters, and four grandchildren. The funeral tcok place at. the Sydenham Cemetery on Wednesday. Canon Mutter conducted the service at the graveside. Through the new scale of charges adopted by the Christchurch City Council, water heating by electricity can be secured all the day round now at so cheap a price that Mercer Vacuum Electric Cylinders, the best heaters on the marekt, should be installed in every home. Mrs F. W. W. Dawson, ‘.‘Hendon,” Matai Street, Riccarton, has gone to Auckland to attend the golden wedding of her parents, Mr and Mrs 11. Obi in Brown. Mr and Mrs H. S. Hobbs and family, Aikman’s Road, are spending a holiday at Governor’s Bay. Mr and Mrs Maurice Moscovitch, London, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are registered at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs Elliot. Cambridge, England, left Christchurch this morning for Temuka. Mr and Mrs J. W. Carr, and Miss and Master Carr, of Wellington, are among the recent arrivals staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs A. G. Woon, Napier, arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning, and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs C. M. Collins. Nelson, arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are staying at Warner's Hotel. Mr and Mrs G. Robertson, who were visiting Christchurch, have returned to Dunedin. Miss Cowlishaw and Mrs J. Turnbull are leaving on Tuesday for a trip to the West Coast, returning to Christchurch, via Nelson and Kaikoura. Mr and Mrs George Murray-Aynsley (Fendalton) are leaving to-night for Wellington, where they will attend the races next week. Mr and Mrs J. F. Buchanan (Little River) are leaving next week for a visit to Wellington. Miss A. Stoddart (Cashmere Hills) has returned from Arthur’s Pass, where she has been spending a few weeks’ holiday. Rev Vincent Gerard and Mrs Gerard, who have been visiting the Misses Gerard (“Willowbank,” Fendalton), returned to Timaru yesterday. Dr and Mrs Charles Chilton have returned from a holiday visit to Arthur’s Pass. Mrs Dakin, who is accompanied by her daughter .Miss Dorothy Dakin, of Christchurch, is visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs Vincent Ward have returned from their honeymoon tour and have taken up their residence at Heretaunga, states an exchange. A wedding of interest to New Zealanders took place recently, when Miss Rosemary Wilson, daughter of Bishop and Mrs Cecil Wilson (Branbury, Western Australia), and grand-daughter of Archbishop Julius, was married, trom the home of her aunt (Mrs Percv E 1 worthy), in Wiltshire, to Mr Dick Studliolme, son of Mr John .Studholme, of Middleton Grange, Christchurch. Mrs T. Tomlinson, Fendalton. who was spending a holiday at Queenstown, returned to C hristchurch last evening.
Recent arrivals at Warner’s Hotel include;—Mr and Mrs G. Robertson Dunedin; Miss Clare Morton. Mr and Mrs J. S. Land, Wellington; Miss Williams. and Mr and Mrs F. W. Renani, London. The engagement is announced of Godfrey, son of the late Dr Gerald V\ estenra, and of Mrs Westenra, Garden Road, Fendalton, to Alvs, daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Duncan, of W ellington. Mr and Mrs M'Phail, Auckland; Mr and Mrs p. O'Connor. Auckland; Mrs Graham. Wanganui; Mr and Mrs T, D_ Moll'ov. Auckland; and Mrs BrooksW nod, England, are among the recent arrivals staying at the United Service Hotel. A very enjoyable partv was given recently by Mr and Mrs Fred Bosher at their residence in Palsgrave Street, on the occasion of the eighth birthday of their daughter Sylvia, who was the recipient of many beautiful presents. The dining-room was daintily arranged with carnival decorations and flowers. The childen, wearing paper hats, were photographed, after which tea was provided. Games and competitions were indulged in, for which prizes were given, prize-winners being Miss Gwen Noble and Masters Harry Nunes and R. Estall. Among those present were —Misses Irene King, Ngaire Whitlev, Carry Horsfield. Elsie Bovce, Nellie M’Culloch. Joyce and Gwen Noble, Pauline Prestige, Beverly Chamberlain, Thelma and Nola Anderson, Mary Lavery and Sylvia Bosher; Masters Gordon Lightfoot, Edwin Danholt. Harry and Ralph Nunes, Kavmond and Alan Estall. Noel Mills and Egerton Officer. Musical items were provided by Mr and Mrs Bruce Estall, Nurse Wadsworth and Miss Ngaire Whitlev Mrs Officer and Mrs Percy King presented birthday cakes to the little guest of honour.
