Tangle Becomes More And More Involved.
RACE MEETING FOR DUKE AND DUCHESS OF YORK. MINISTER DOES NOT SANCTION JOCKEY CLUB’S PROPOSAL. GRANTS PERMISSION TO NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING CLUB. The tangle which has developed since the refusal of the Government to grant a totalisator permit for a special race meeting, to be held in Christchurch during the coming visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, is becoming more and more involved as time goes on. A special meeting of the executive of the Royal Reception Committee called some time ago considered two proposals, one from the Canterbury Jockey Club, the other from the Metropolitan Trotting Club. The former was accepted with the proviso that arrangements were made to include trotting fixtures in the programme. The C.J.C. agreed to include trotting races in their programme, and further agreed to grant £IOOO to the entertainment funds from the profits of the meeting. In order to hold their meeting during the visit of the Duke and Duchess it was necessary that the C.J.C. alter the date of their meeting from February 19 to March 12 or 15. Application for sanction in regard to the changing of dates was made to the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr R. F. Bollard. Mr Bollard also received the official programme, which included the C.J.C.’s proposed meeting, from the Royal Reception Committee. In the meantime the New Brighton Trotting Club applied for Mr Bollard’s approval of the alteration of the dates of their meeting from March 17 and 19 to March 12 and 15. The Minister approved of the alteration, so that now a trotting meeting will be held on the Metropolitan Trotting Ground. Addington. Mr Bollard has sent the following telegram to the Royal Reception Committee:— With reference to the suggested official programme for the entertainment of their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess during their coining visit to Christchurch, it is observed that the Canterbury Jockey Club propose to make application to the Racing Conference to have the date of their summer meeting changed from February 19 to March 15, which would permit of the inclusion of this racing meeting in your programme. The New Brighton Trotting Club already have their fixture for March 12 and 1:>, and under these circumstances the Government could not agree to the proposed Jockey Club’s race meeting on the latter date. For your information the New Brighton 1 lotting (.lull have asked that they he granted permission to lace at Addington, and I propose to agree to this irrespective of whether his Royal Highness attends the meeting or not, a matter which, it appears to the Government, must be left to the Duke to decide after his arrival.”
WILL TROTTING MEETING BE PART OF PROGRAMME?
Whether the trotting; meeting will be included in the official entertainment is not yet known. A special meeting of the executive of the Reception Committee will be held next Wednesday, and the matter will be settled then. The alteration of the dates of the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting was made possible as the result, of negotiations with the Timaru Trotting Club, who were to hold their meeting on March 12, but agreed to allow New Brighton to race on that day. A special programme lias been prepared An invitation to attend the meeting will -be extended to the Duke of York.
! In a Quandary. The l J.C. arc in a quandary over the matter. The Minister s refusal to approve of their proposal has come as a bombshell to them. It is understood that a special meeting of their executive will be called to consider what action they will take in the matter. They are at a standstill at present; but it was stated this morning that they intend to approach the president cf the Racing Conference. Apnlying Pruning Knife. Mr \Y. E. Leadley, secretary of the Royal Reception Committee, stated this morning that it is understood that the Government are applying the pruning knife very extensively to the I entertainment programme, as they do ; not wish to over-work the Royal
