DAMAGE DONE BY STORM IN NORTH IS EXTENSIVE.
TOUR OF INSPECTION MADE BY ENGINEERS. iCfff (Special to the "Star") AUCKLAND, January 15. Extensive damage was done in Waitemata County as a result of the heay* rain storm at Christmas. Mr G. Jackson, county engineer, who yesterday returned from a tour of inspection w.th Mr If. Dickson, public works engineer, said some of the residents told him they considered the flood was the worst since 1882. Three bridges were carried away. The Swanson and Waitakere Bridges have been temporarily replaced, and it is understood they will be rebuilt in concrete. The bridge at Henderson has been replaced by a footbridge built by the residents, and a permanent structure will be erected by the council. The roads in the county suffered considerably. Several washouts occurred on the road to Te Ilenga, and it is estimated that £SOO will have to be spent to restore it to good order. The road leading to the beach at Muriwai was completely washed away, but the council will have a temporary road ready for the motor sports. Other damage included the washing away of a large dance hall at Ferndale. No time was lost by the council employees in attending to the most urgent work and they carried on right through the holidays.
