Xhb bbpkated shocks ov babthquaih Hut have ooourred in New Zealand demand mora attention than they seem to receive. It is questioned by aome people whether it ia ■safe or prudent to allow lofty buildings of briok and atone to be ereoted in a place so subjeot to earthquakes, and the geologioal formation of whioh shows that voloanio aotion of tbe most tremendous kind has taken plaoe within reoent geologioal perioda. Haa any investigation been made by soientiflo men, aa to the lateat period at whioh destructive ahooka of earthquake hare ooourred P If not, ib ia time tbat our Government Geologioal Dspartment took tbe matter up. It wonld surely be possible by an examination of the vegetation, and the alluvial deposits, to determine, with some approaoh to acourary, when the most reoent earthquakes of such a oharaoter as would destroy lofty buildings like the Cathedral spire, took place in tbis island. Maori traditions might help in fixing the dates.
