The Te Puke Times TUESDAY, DEC 9. THE COURTHOUSE.
The motion passed by the Town Board last night to the effect that the Minister for Public Works be asked to increase the grant for the local Courthouse by £200 was one that will meet with the approval of local residents. Three years ago the sum of £700 was placed on the Estimates for this building, but, for some reason or other, the vote was allowed to lapse. In the intervening years To Puke has grown very considerably, but the Minister, in reinstating the grant, has given us an Irishman's rise by cutting down the amount by £200. Now £500 will not give us a very presentable building, and while we have every respect for. Mr Eraser's determination to ciit; down all extravagances in con nection with the erection of miblic buildings, we do not think the pruning knife should be too freely applied in connection with small works which are a necessity in country districts. A . few hundreds lopped off the cost of some of the ornate edifices erected in the larger towns and cities and devoted to giving a few conveniences to country settlers would be greatly appreciated. We trust that the Board will be successful with'its application, but with the memory of the attitude taken up by the Minister in connection with the railway goods shed, we must confess that wo are not very hopeful of the result.
