Major W. A. Bennett, who is one of the officers with the force of special constables in Auckland, paid a flying visit nome this week, having received four days' leave of absence. He returns to Auckland to-day. Needless to say he received a very warm welcome.

I Mr S. H. Macdougall, of Pongakawa, has instructed the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co. to hold a clearing sale of his complete dairy herd on Wednesday, December 10th, at 11 a.m. The stock consists of 100 choice Jersey and Holstein cows in milk. The sale is a genuine dispersal one, Mr MacDougail having decided to relinquish dairying, owing to the difficulty in procuring labor.

The, following programme will be shown by the Electric Picture Company on Saturday and Monday evenings: '' Death or Glory,' 2000 ft drama; "An Arabian Popular Theatre," topical; "The Lady Killer," comic; "Nerves and the Man/' drama ; "Child of the Purple Stage," drama; "Pulque Pete and his Opera troupe,'' comic; '' Lost Years,'' drama ; " On the Coast of Iteria,' scenic; "Hawkeye, Showman," comic; "Through Greece,"scenic.

The Lyttelton by-election will probably be contested by Mr M. s& Miller, who will support the Government, and who is a member of the Lyttelton Harbor Board and Borough Council, an ex-Mayor, and a temperance advocate ; by Dr Thacker, whose platform has not been divulged ■; by Mr W. Radcliffe, a member of the Borough Council and an ex-Mayor, who will stand as a Liberal or Independent Liberal, and by a Social Democratic candidate, either Mr Voyce, secretary of the Lyttelton Stevedores' Union, or Mr D. G. Sullivan.

At a meeting of the Tauranga Railway League on Wednesday, the following resolution was passed : " t'his, meeting of the Tauranga Railway League and residents of the Tauranga and Katikati districts desire to- express the utmost astonishment and indignation at the paltry votes of £2000 for the Maunga Junction' to Tauranga, and £10,000 for the Waihi-Athenree section of the railway. The meeting regards the first-named vote as' an insult to the intelligence and progressive character of the inhabitants of, Tauranga and the western end of the county, comprising approximately one-third of the population of the Bay of Plenty. Nothing less than a vote on the supplementary estimates sufficient to complete the line from Maunga Junction to the bridge site, Tauranga Harbor, will satisfy the just demands of these peonle, or adequately redeem your promises." The resolution was wired to the Minister for Public Works.
