The Te Puke Times FRIDAY, NOV 14. WHAT IS SEDITION

IN view of the recent arrest of several ot the strike leaders on charges of sedition, the following definition of the offence, from the Crimes Act, 1908, may be of interest to our readers. Sections 118 and 119 are the ones .relevant to the present situation, and they read as follows■ 118 (1) A seditious intention is an intention-(a) To bring into hatred or contempt, or to excite disaffection against the person of His Majesty, or the Government or Constitution of the United Kingdom, or of any part thereof, or either House of the.lmperial Parliament, .or the Government or constitution of New Zealand, or the Parliament thereof, or the administration of justice, or _ (b) To incite His Majest'ys subjects to attempt to procure otherwise than by lawful means the alteration of any matter affecting the Constitution, laws, or Government of the United Kingdom or of New Zealand, or (c) To raise discontent or disaffection amongst his Majesty's subjects, or

■ (d) To promote feelings of illwill and hostility between different classes of such subjects. (2) No one shall be deemed to have a seditious iiitention only because he intends in good faith— (e) To show that His Majesty has been misled or mistaken in his measures, or

(f) To point out errors or defects in the Government or Constitution of the United Kingdom, or of any part thereof, or of New Zealand, or in the administration of justice ; or to incite His Majesty's subjects to attempt to procure by lawful'means the alteration of any matter affecting the Constitution, laws, or Government of the United Kingdom, or of New Zealand, or (g) To point out, in order to removal, matters producing or having a tendency to produce ! feelings of hatred or ill-will between different classes of His Majesty's subjects, (3) Seditious words are words expressive of a seditious intention. (4) A seditious conspiracy is an agreement between two or more persons to carry into execution a seditious intention.

119. Everyone is liable to two years' imprisonment who speaks any seditious words, or publishes any seditious libel, or is a party to any seditious conspiracy.
