MEN BEFORE THE COURT.
Wednesday. . Mr W. T. Young. President of the Federation . of Labour, and Secretary of the Wellington branch of the Seamen's Union, was arrested this morning on chargcs of sedition and brought before the Magistrate's Court. Semple, Holland, Bailey, and Fraser also appeared. At an early hour the Court was packed to the utmost capacity. < A large body of mounted and foot specials, accompanied by the regular police, guarded all approaches and entrance to the Court, while others lined the walls on c-ach side of. the Courtroom,' with drawn batons. Mr Riddell, S.M. presided. Young's case was called first.' He was charged with using se,ditious words at tne Basin P.> sorve on Sunday, October 26, when he said : "If the police force is coming to suppress us we will undertake to mass ten or fifteen thousand armed men, ready to protect themselves as armed men. If the police use batons wc will give them one back." He was also charged on the same date with inciting a person to resist the police. He was further charged with inciting persons to commit a breach of the peace, Mr P. J. O'fiegan appeared for accuse! and applied f( r bail, j This was granted -£253 self and two sureties of £239 on the indictable offence?, but was refused on the summary charge, Yo'ing waj renla. 1 did for a week. week. Bail was refused Semple and Holland, but was not applied for in the cases of Frcser and Bailey. Holland, when charged, dramatically stated that he did not intend to plead.
