THE STREET IMPROVEMENT SCHEME.

ENGINEER'S' ESTIMATE-' £3,630. ; At the meeting of the Town Board on Monday evening, the report and estimates of the engineer (Mr Spencer) for improving the main street were read as follows :- | . Dear Sir, -In accordance with your Board's instructions I have the honor herewith to submit them my report and estimates on forming the Main Street, with footpaths, concrete kerb and channelling, metalling, and fencing off a central avenue from Winstone Street to Oxford Street; also a water supply with the necessary reticulation. MAIN STREET. j In forming the Main Street, jl have kept in view, in fixing the new grades, the question of laying sewers in the future, and to facilitate this I propose the present level at the concrete culvert near the station should be lifted a maximum of 4 in 6 and near Mr Sinclair's shop 3 in ]j. The levels of the main business portion of the town from the Hotel to Oxford St will remain practically as at present. In my estimate for forming I have omitted the filling of the street on the South side,of the, street at the concrete culvert, and from Dalgety's eastwards on the South side also, as it is not proposed to form footpaths there at present.' The length it is proposed to deal with, viz.,\ the Station to Kink Street is some 46 chains, and the portion to be top-dressed, v fenced, and planted is 25 chains froih Ansell's corner,to Oxford Street,, along both sides of which will be metalled, so that I have allowed for 72 chains of metalling 30ft wide by Sin deep. Ic will/be for your Board to.say whether thay wish each strip of metalling to converge at either, end of the fenced off portion or whether they prefer the 3.oft strip of metalling to continue.'along one side of the street, so that an extension of the grassed strip can be extended at some future date. Personally I am inclined to think that after experiencing the benefits and comfort which, this proposed central avenue will provide, the To Puke ratepayers will desire the Board to go in for such extensions of the avenue as funds permit. '" , ;:

Seventy chains of concrete kerb and channelling are allowed for, < which can be clone for £5 per chain complete if ,-the aggregate can be procured at a reason!able price, say not more than 10 shillings per cubic yard. Seventy chains or' footpath are estimated . for, formed, metalled with screenings and tar-painted, lGftl wide with screenings 2in. thick. \

The concrete culvert will need lengthening on one side, roughly 35ft, with at a cost of about £65.

The top-soil from ,thc cuttings should be reserved for spreading in the Avenue which should be grassed at the proper time. Drainage to the nearest low ground from sumps will be needed. Fencing I propose should be of totara posts and rounded rimu top rail and 3 plain wires, posts and rail painted .white. I append herewith, my estimate :— £ ,s. d.
