STRIKE AT HUNTLY.
FIVE HUNDRED MEN OUT. Huntly, Monday. Over 500 coalminers are on strike at Huntly. A fortnight ago the Taupiri Coal Company gave notice to sixteen men that their services would no longer be required after October 17th. Three of the members under notice are members of the Miners' Union Executive. A charge of victimisation has accordingly been levelled at the company, and the result is that the mines to-day are idle. The miners decided to strike at a special meeting held on Saturday afternoon. It was explained that when the men were served with notice the company was asked to agree to a conference, but declined, the directors stating that not only were they unable to reinstate the -sixteen men, but that they would probably have to dispense with the services of still more men at an early date in view of the fact that the demand for coal was slackening off as the summer approached. This morning, before the mine whistles blew the streets were lined with pickets, and any miner who intended making for the pithead was buttonholed and in the most of cases talked out of purpose.
