THE MOUNT WHARF.
LETTER FROM THE NORTHERN STEAMSHIP CO.
In reply to a communication from the local Chamber of Commerce urging that a steamer call on regular days at the Mount for the purpose of discharging and taking in cargo, the Northern Steamship Company writes as follows Mr Robt. Tees, Hon. Secretary, Chamber of Commerce, Te Puke. Dear Sir,—l am in receipt of your letter of the 4th inst., and in reply have to say that when the railway line from Manganui to Te Puke is open for traflic we will be making the Mount a regular port of call, but until I know what the railway timetable is likely to be I cannot give you a schedule of the time our steamer will be calling for passengers and cargo. I may point out that, it would be impossible for the s.s. Ngapuhi to call there until the railway wharf is put into working order, as at the present time tho Captain informs me that it is in an unsound state and dangerous. He states that great improvements would have to be made to facilitate the working of cargos as at present the rail only run, dead on to the wharf, and it would take twice as long to discharge. A line would be required so that several trucks c<mM go on to the wharf, and got broadside on so that cargo could b? worked without any delay.
I enciosc you copy of Captain Haultain's report, which will speak for itself in that respect. You will see he requires the tee lengthened as only one truck ran go on at a time, and it has to be loaded end on.
I therefore trust your Chamber will go into the matter and see tliat the wharf is repaired and facilities given for the receiving and delivery of cargo, then, when it ia decided to open the line, we will be pleased to submit to you a schedule of the timetable for our steamer calling at the Mount each trip.—Yours, faithfully,
For the Northern Steamship Co., Ltd.. Ciias. Ransom, Manager.
