Mr Fraser 1 on Friday, to therprose- '■ ; cution of the Waihi-Tauranga' r - ■ section of the East Coast rail, way. Mr Massey : agreed that the request made wasreasonable He explained that the Government had not yet considered the Public Works Estimates, but exv pressed the' opinion that the-Waihi-Tauranga section wouldget a fair share of ■ the available .' money, though money , was said to be scarce. He assured , the • deputation' the expenditure on-, public works last year was a .re-' cord. The Government had ? made up its mind to go. in for a \ policy of development, and that 1 " policy would be adhered to. All - lines of national importance, including the Waihi-Tauranga sec- V tion of the East Coast railway would be recognised. The Hon. Mr Fraser declared, with reference to the recent Te Puke deputation's request, that he would not start the line from ?"■' Opotiki end towards Matata, as- : it would be a dead end, and there- • fore a waste of money, at the-' present time. He intended to pro-c • secute the section from the Mount . - v Tauranga, and he also intended : ' to a sum on the Estimife fQrtheWaihieni " i
