EAST COAST RAILWAY EXTENSION.
4 ; A meeting of • the Matata branch of the Farmers' Union was held at theMatata Hotel on Friday evening last regarding the urgent need for wharfage accommodation at the Mount. In view of the speedy construction of the line further east, it was decided to forward to the Minister for Public Works the following resolution ''That in view of the .early opening of < the railway to Te Puke and its extension to Paengaroa and Matata eastward, it is essential that the Government be urged to place a sufficient sum on the Estimates to ensure the immediate erection of a permanent wharf at the Mount." Delegates-were present from Te Puke, Paengaroa, Whakatane, and Taneatua, besides a large number of local members, and it was unanimously considered that the resolution would voice the wishes of the whole of the East Coast.
It was also resolved to represent to the Government the need for the purchase of the Native lands ahead of the formation of the railway, so as to expedite settlement and secure all advantages possible to the district and settlers,
Votes of thanks to the delegates and to the Chairman (Mr Turner) terminated the meeting.
