The Te Puke Times. FRIDAY, JULY 4. THE TOWN BOARD

On Thursday next the nomina- j tions of all those persons who aspire to seats on, the Town Board must be placed in the hands of Mr 0. J. Hodge, the returning offieer. It is commonly asserted that the contest for the honor of representing the town on its first municipal body is likely to be a very keen one, and that the candidates will far outnumber the seats to be filled. We trust that this will be found to be the case, for it is a healthy sign when the citizens display a lively interest in local politics, ai d showman ambition to take a foremost place in guiding a bwn's destinies. Wehavemaiy residents within the boundaries of the town district who should prove useful members of th 3 Board, and we trust that those who may be chary of coming forward, will waive any personal disinclination to become candidates if they think that their services are likely to be beneficial to the township. We would point out that the Board will occupy a most responsible position. In its nands will rest to a very gie t extent the future progress of Te Puke. It will have to iniate schemes that it believes to be for the welfare of the inhabitants, and although the latter will be the real arbiters as to whether any project is to be carried out, the administration will be in the hands of the Board. This town is, in reality, but in its infancy compared with other centres so far as the conveniences of civilisation are concerned, and the commissioners should be men who, while exercising all reasonable prudence, are prepared to regard not merely present requirements, but future contingencies. We think that the bulk of the residents recognise this, and are prepared to give every encouragement to a progressive policy. In the meantime let us remind those who are | willing to place their services at the disposal of the electors that the time for receiving nominations is limited, and that their names should be handed to Mr Hodge not later than noon on Thursday next.
