A fair buoy for marking a channel cosj. approximately #70, to which had to be added the cost of mo,)i ing chain. The buoys in the Auckland harbor were moored with fifteen fathoms of one-inch sti/dded chain and threequarter ton concrete sinker, the chain costing approximately £10. Four firms in Auckland made iron or steel buoys. The meeting resolved to thank the respective Boards for their information;. 1 Mrß. P. Andrews wrote, on behalf of the Norther Steamship Company, applying for the use of the shipping portion of the new office, to be built on the wharf at a rental of £25 per annum.—The application was held over. The Board then proceeded wrh the drafting ofthe conditions of employment in connection with the appointment of a secretary, treasurer, wharfinger, and collector (combined duties). It was decided that a fidelity bond of £200 be taken out in the South British office. Mr C. Lowe was appointed Secretary io the Board,'other applicants being Messrs D. Taylor and W. J. Baigent. Accounts amounting to £39 3s Id were passed for payment as funds permit, A resolution was carried on the motion of-Mr Adams, appointing a committee, to be called the Endowment Investigation Committee: whose duties shall be ; 1. To nuke enquiries and ascertain as far as possible the extent in value and area of the endowments of the various. Harbor Boards in New Zealand ; 2. To ascertain what Crown lands within or near to the Tauranga County are suitable for endowments, also what property has been reserved' and vested in the Marine Department for pilot, signalling, landing places or other purposes; 3. To' suggest a line of action to induce the Government to accede to our request to suitably endow our Harbor Board. • The motion was carried, and Messrs Gill, Grant, and McEwen were appointed the members of the C mmittee. It w;:s decided that the Board open a banking account with the Bank of New Zealand, and the Chairman, Mr Stewart, and the Treasurer were'appointed to operate uoon the account. using the wharves. 5: Transhipment charges are done away with. 6. AD boats plying for hire arc to pay 'a fee of £1 per annum. 7* All pleasure boats for hire are to pay a fee of 5s per annum. No export duty on goods of any description leaving the harbor is proposed. All vessels and goods entering the port will have to pay, hut goods landed where the Board has no wharf will not pay a further charge.

Vessels using the wharf have been granted a small reduction and transhipment charges have been done away with. These concessions, the committee estimates, will about equal the new charge for entering the port. The Board then considered the by-laws. With regard to a clause re inward transnipments recommending that for all goods, whether consigned to this or any other port, which are landed on any wharf And re-shipped, the transhipment charges inward be 3d per ton, Mr Stewart said the clause affected farmers, and he requested that it be altered to read—That for all goods, whether consigned to this or any other port, which are landed on any wharf and reshipped, within, the Harbor Board district free, if reshipped to any other port, 3d per ton. It was pointed out-that the charges referred to placed goods for Katikati on the same basis of charges as those for Tauranga. Another clause recommended that storage upon transhipment goods be free for [the first three days, after'that time 3d per ton or part of a ton per day. Mr Stewart asked that the storage upon transhipment goods be free till removal to other places. The two clauses were adopted unaltered. It was decided that parcels 4ft and under be exempted from the harbor improvement rate, which is 6d per ton on all goods entering the harbor. This means that parcels 4ft and under will now be charged 3d, compared with 9d under former conditions for parcels over 2ft. On the motion of Mr Stewart, it was resolved that the by-laws as amended be approved by the Board and adopted at a special meeting to be held on May 7th. The Board decided to retain Mr Hine as traffic manager for the wharves. , It was d'. cided that the committee confer with the Whakamarama Timber company with reference to the latter's'proposal to erect a wharf on the Te Puna river. t It was resolved that applications he invited for the position of harbor-master at a remuneration of £--'0 pe:* annum.. The C'.iiuiiiUei) appointed at last meeting to consider various matters, suhnuued a report, and. the Board resolved as follows :-| That the clause ;e a common* seal (depicting the Mount) J& : adopted, the general commiife&j to suggest a motto. .■•■ &fi§ That the travelling abtfi&ceS for members be Is per inife.-on^ way, , ;:• - v .'3 That the tion be deferred till .*hespmesting, when the election^ man will take place with the provisions-:oJtHe i 'Act.
