THE VOLUNTEER RECEPTION
The reception given on Monday to the Auckland and Thames representatives by their comrades and the citizens of Auckland was gratifying considered from many points of view. The welcome was well conceived, carried through without a hitch, and characterised by a genuine heartiness and grace which reflected credit on all concerned. To the representatives themselves, and especially to liieut. Lucas and Gunner Parslo w, it must have been peculiarly gratifying coming after the substantial honours they had already won. It was also a source of gratification and encouragement to the whole Volunteer Force of Auckland, and will stimulate officers and members to renewed exertions in the mastery of their duties. It was also gratifying as snowing that the people of Auckland have not lost faith in their citizen soldiers, and are ready to show their appreciation of merit when it deserves recognition. The reception was most opportune in the present critical relations between England and. Russia and the consequent necessity for defensive precautions.
